Nach dem Tod der Mutter 1870 Rückkehr nach Berlin. Zusammenarbeit mit Adrian Ludwig Richter in Loschwitz bei Dresden. 1871 Verleihung des Michael-Beer-Stipendium für Historienmalerei; längerer Studienaufenthalt in Italien. Ab 1873 als freischaffender Künstler in München. 1876 Bekanntschaft mit dem Maler Friedrich Geselschap und Umsiedlung nach Frankfurt. Über Hans Thoma Zugang zur Kronberger Malerkolonie.
