Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition; First Printing. Signed by B. H. Liddell Hart and Robert Graves. Two volume set, one volume contains Lawrence's letters to Liddell Hart, the other contains Lawrence's letters to Robert Graves. This first printing was limited to 1,000 signed copies, this set is number 368. Both Liddell Hart and Robert Graves wrote their own separate biographies of Lawrence after WWI. Graves always intended to write a biography while Liddell Hart originally meant to write a military history of Lawrence's actions in WWI before changing his mind and writing a full fledged biography. Both men were friends of Lawrence's and received his extensive help in writing their biographies. Both biographers were combat veterans of WWI, but Graves was a famous poet and classicist while Liddell Hart became a famous military historian and strategist whose ideas about indirect warfare and mechanized combined arms became very influential. Because they approached their biographies from completely different viewpoints, the help Lawrence gave Graves was very different from what he told Liddell Hart. These volumes contain Lawrence's answers to their questions and critical commentary on their manuscripts. They also contain explanatory text by Liddell Hart and Graves. Both volumes have gilded top page edges. Both have two previous owner bookplates on their front pastedowns. Slipcase has a large previous owner bookplate on it. Both volumes have slightly slanted spines and some fading to their spines. This is a heavy 2 volume set - no international orders - Priority orders will probably require extra postage. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Signed by Contributor. …

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst editions, limited to 1,000 copies signed by Robert Graves and Liddell Hart in their respective volumes, here both numbered 476. These works collect Lawrence's correspondence with two of his biographers and are attractively designed by A. P. Tedesco. The correspondence spans 1920-35; the corrections take the form of strike-throughs and additions in italics, showing both Lawrence's attention to detail and his skill as a writer. Other matters are also discussed, such as Lawrence's opinions on the publication of I, Claudius (pp. 174-9 in Graves). The frontispiece in Graves is based on a pen-and-ink sketch Graves bought at the Caledonian Market. Robert Graves first met Lawrence in 1919 while they were at Oxford University, Graves as a student and Lawrence as a fellow at All Souls College. He published the greatly successful biography Lawrence and the Arabs in 1927. Captain B. H. Liddell Hart was a soldier, military historian, and writer, whose first known contact with Lawrence dates from 1921. They developed a friendship, with Liddell Hart publishing his biography T. E. Lawrence in Arabia and After in 1934. O'Brien A210, A211; Higginson A49b. Two works, octavo. Portrait frontispieces to both works, Liddell Hart vol. with halftone plate; title pages printed in brown and black with vignette of a trophy of arms. Original red and grey cloth, front covers and spines gilt lettered on grey and red labels, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Aggiungi al carrelloSigned limited first edition of Lawrence of Arabiaâs remarkable letters, notes, and answers to questions for his two biographers, the true first, preceding the English issue of January 1939. Octavo, two volumes, original buff cloth with titles to the spines, top edges gilt, untrimmed fore-edges, each with a black-and-white frontispiece of Lawrence, that of the Liddell Hart volume being Eric Kenningtonâs âThe Cheshire Cat.â One of 1,000 numbered copies, of which 500 were printed for the United States, this is number 67 in both volumes. Boldly signed on the limitation pages, the first volume by Robert Graves, author of Lawrence and the Arabs (1927), and the second by B. H. Liddell Hart, author of âT. E. Lawrenceâ: In Arabia and After (1934). Near fine in near fine to very good dust jackets with light toning and a small closed tear to the top corner of the front panel of the Graves jacket. Housed in the original publisherâs board slipcase with wear to the edges. Designed by A. P. Tedesco. T. E. Lawrence (1888-1935), the legendary Lawrence of Arabia, was among the most elusive figures of the twentieth century, and these two volumes come as close as any to catching him in the act of shaping his own legend. Robert Graves, who had befriended Lawrence at Oxford after the First World War, wrote Lawrence and the Arabs (1927) at speed and with his subjectâs close help, and his volume gathers the letters, notes, and answers to questions that Lawrence supplied, along with a critical commentary by Graves. The military historian Basil Liddell Hart, who published his own study in 1934 (issued in the United States as Colonel Lawrence: The Man Behind the Legend), drew Lawrence out on strategy and on the Arab Revolt, and his volume preserves their letters, notes, and conversations, with Lawrenceâs own comments on what had been written about him. Issued three years after Lawrenceâs death in a motorcycle accident in 1935, the two books reveal contrasting sides of his personality, the intimate friend to Graves and the military thinker to Liddell Hart. The bibliographer Philip OâBrien called them âremarkable documents showing Lawrenceâs intimate work with two of his biographers.â. …

Aggiungi al carrelloSigned limited edition, number 95 out of 128 copies printed for Liddell Hart and signed by himself and Ronald Storrs. Loosely inserted is a compliments slip from Viscount Carlow, who founded the Corvinus Press in 1936. Carlow had formed a friendship with Lawrence in the early 1930s, which was largely based on a shared interest in book-collecting, fine printing, and languages. They had even discussed setting up a private press - a plan that foundered due to Lawrence's premature death. Lawrence of Arabia prints the speeches by Liddell Hart and Storrs given at a luncheon in memory of Lawrence, about a month after his death; that by Liddell Hart is entitled "Lawrence: The Artist in War and Literature" and that by Storrs, "Lawrence: Himself". The edition comprised 24 copies on Medway paper specially printed for Liddell Hart and Storrs, 25 copies on Boswell paper, 6 copies on Winchmore Blue paper, and 70 further copies on Medway paper. There were also 3 copies kept for the printer. All 128 copies in the edition were signed. O'Brien E101. Arnold Walter Lawrence (ed.), T.E. Lawrence by His Friends, 1968, pp. 182-88. Quarto. Aggiungi al carrelloFirst American edition, signed limited issue, number 419 of 1,000 copies. These works collect Lawrence's correspondence with two of his most famous biographers. The letters contained in these two works span 1920-35, revealing Lawrence's close connection with his biographers and his attempts to carefully control his reputation. The corrections to both Graves's and Liddell Hart's manuscripts take the form of strikethroughs and additions in italics, showing both Lawrence's attention to detail and his skill as a writer. Other matters are also discussed, such as Lawrence's opinions on the publication of I, Claudius (pp. 174-79 in Graves). The frontispiece in Graves is based on a pen-and-ink sketch he bought at the Caledonian Market. Robert Graves published the greatly successful biography Lawrence and the Arabs in 1927. Liddell Hart published his biography T. E. Lawrence in Arabia and After in 1934. O'Brien A214, A215; Higginson A49. 2 works, octavo. Portrait frontispieces, single halftone photographic plate; title pages printed in brown and black. Aggiungi al carrelloSigned limited edition, number 103 of 128 copies signed by Liddell Hart and Ronald Storrs, inscribed on the front free endpaper "To E. M. Forster, from Carlow. The printer of this book. Nov 22 1936". This copy retains the rare jacket, unknown to O'Brien. The Corvinus Press was established in 1936 by Viscount Carlow, who had formed a friendship with Lawrence in the early 1930s based on a shared interest in book collecting, fine printing, and languages. They had even discussed setting up a private press - a plan that foundered due to Lawrence's premature death. E. M. Forster and Lawrence first met in 1921 at the house of Emir Feisal. Forster was impressed by Lawrence, who was already famous for his exploits in the Arab Revolt. Three years later Siegfried Sassoon asked Forster to read the as-yet unpublished Seven Pillars of Wisdom, which left him so inspired that he wrote a letter of effusive praise to Lawrence: "You will never show it to any one who will like it more than I do: its subject and incidentals suit me: also my critical sense never stops telling me it's fine" (Lawrence, 9). This kindled a friendship that lasted until Lawrence's death, as one of Forster's many queer relationships forged through the intimate exchange of literature. They continued most of their correspondence through letters, discussing and critiquing each other's work, but also visiting in person a number of times. In 1927, Forster dedicated The Eternal Moment and Other Stories, "To TE in the absence of anything else". Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition, first impression, of this influential early biography which was central to the formation of the Lawrence myth. Captain Sir Basil Henry Liddell Hart (1895-1970) was one of the leading military thinkers of the 20th century, and his book is often considered the first "serious" Lawrence biography after the sensationalism of Lowell Thomas and Robert Graves. It provides valuable insight into Lawrence's achievements as a strategist "who had the vision to anticipate the guerrilla trend of civilized warfare" (p. 382). Liddell Hard considered that his friend Lawrence "was more deeply steeped in knowledge of war than any other general of the First World War"; a judgement that has been seen as hyperbolic by many in the intervening 80 years, but which in view of current thinking on the increasing prevalence of asymmetric warfare, and counterinsurgency operations seems remarkably prescient. Liddell Hart views Lawrence as a brilliant leader, worthy of comparison to Napoleon, and Marlborough. Using minimal resources against a numerically and technologically superior foe, Lawrence "turned the weakness of the Arabs into an asset, and the strength of the Turks into a debit" (p. 383). O'Brien E058. Octavo. Halftone portrait frontispiece after Augustus John, 11 similar plates, 5 folding maps. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, publisher's device in blind on rear cover, top edge red, bottom edge untrimmed. With dust jacket. A few faint stains to cloth, top right corner a little bumped; jacket unclipped, minor chips along edges, spine a touch toned with small skinned patch at foot, front panel with faint tide marks and neat repair to foot: a very good copy in like jacket.…
