Ne s'étant pas représenté au renouvellement sénatorial du 5 janvier 1879, il vécut à l'écart de la politique, reprit ses études de philosophie, d'histoire et de critique musicale, et sous l'impulsion de sa femme, se voua aux questions sociales. Il avait épousé Marie-Jeanne Godart-Desmarest, fille du Directeur de la cristallerie de Baccarat, dont il devint à son tour Directeur. C'est avec l'aide de cette femme charitable, qui était par ailleurs poète et artiste, qu'il créa les institutions patronales qui lui valurent un grand prix à l'Exposition universelle de 1889. Ayant décidé conjointement d'employer leur fortune 'pour Dieu et pour les pauvres', ils s'efforcèrent de rapprocher les diverses classes et de réaliser la paix sociale. Dans ce but, il fonda trois chaires d'économie sociale : à l'Ecole libre des sciences politiques, à la Sorbonne et à l'Ecole de Droit. Mais son oeuvre la plus importante reste l'instauration du Musée social, centre d'études et de documentation, qui fut inauguré le 25 mars 1895 par Alexandre Ribot et Jules Simon. Il l'entretint sa vie durant et lui légua à sa mort une fortune considérable.
