An incomplete set of 80 original hand colored lithographs of the robes and costumes worn by French aristocracy, clergy, and judiciary from the 13th - 19th centuries. From a series of 380 lithographs executed by Hippolyte Le Comte and published 1820-21 by Francois Delpech. Delpech operated the most popular lithographic print shop in Paris; LeComte was a French painter best known for his large scale historical paintings and ballet designs; the caricaturist J.J. Grandville worked in his studio. Approximately 8 x10 , signed in the plates -- bound in period board covers, with several plates detached. Covers heavily rubbed; plates are in good condition -- age-toned but the images are bright; occasional light foxing. Inquire for more scans. Plates 109-180 consecutively are bound in period board covers; another 8 plates are loose: 10, 64-67, 348, 364, 367. Several of the loose plates are trimmed about 1/2".

Thieme/B. XXII, 526). - The French military painter Hippolyte Bellangé (1800-66) "was capable of painting anecdotal scenes and combining the most comical situations with the most serious ones. His style made him extremely popular as a painter of French military success. Apart from his numerous paintings he created a body of some 600 lithographs" (cf. Thieme/B.
