Bells, of both Eastern and Western origin, reached a first peak in Europe during the Middle Ages, as swinging-bells. These were also used for peals: a rhythmical play of soundds achieved with the help of clappers - the origin of what is now the manually played carillon. During the second half of the 14th century tower-clocks were installed everywhere and these not only gave the hour-strikes but also played a melody on a few small bells, later to become chimes. De geschiedenis van de klokgietkunst in de Lage Landen. In dit boekwerk wordt voor de eerste maal een volledig overzicht gegeven van oorsprong, geschiedenis en gebruik van klokken en beiaarden, terwijl tevens de gieters en gietkunst in de Lage Landen uitvoerig besproken worden. In de tot nu toe tot stand gekomen publikaties ligt vaak de nadruk op de bekende gebroeders Hemony, terwijl de meeste werken aan het euvel lijden dat ofwel België, ofwel Nederland totaal of vrijwel geheel verzwegen wordt. Veelal meent men dat na de 17de eeuwse Hemony's slechts een tijdperk van verval intreedt. Nochtans is juist voor België de 18de eeuw een periode van grote bloei en wel op basis van kennis die in de Noordelijke Nederlanden eens verworven was, doch toen al weer verloren was gegaan. Anderzijds heeft het 18de eeuwse Nederland op niet te miskennen wijze geprofiteerd van de zuidelijke opleving. Er is dan ook in feite een voortdurende wisselwerking geweest. Vanuit deze situatie heeft de bekende campanoloog André Lehr Nederland en België gelijkwaardig behandeld.
