Large-4to; Contemporary half-leather binding with gilt title on spine. With engraved title, 2 leaves (Tableau General) and 65 engraved plates (32 colored and 2 double page). - Extremely scarce second edition of this important atlas-volume of the official account of the Baudin voyage to the Pacific. With 25 more plates than the first edition of the atlas published between 1807-1816. This very scarce second edition was prepared by Freycinet after he returned from his own expedition to the Pacific between 1817 and 1820. It is not generally known that the 1824 second edition of the Partie Historique contains some significant changes and additions to the first edition. The maps and charts of the first edition atlas, which bore the nationalistic and ambitious name of Terre Napoléon and included imperial French names for many parts of the coast, were omitted or greatly altered for the second edition atlas. This atlas also includes twenty-five new plates, many of which are coloured. Freycinets alterations to the second edition reflect the political reality of the times and finally recognise the just claims of the English navigators, in particular Matthew Flinders, to the discovery of the Australian coast (Wantrup). - With two views of Sydney (one folding), plan of Sydney, a view of Timor (folded), coastal profiles, artefacts, natural history and ethnographic subjects. The Baudin-Freycinet Expedition was one of the most significant early explorations of Australia. Commissioned by the French government in 1800, the expedition aimed to complete the cartographic survey of the Australian coastline. Under the command of Nicolas Baudin, the two vessels, G ographe and Naturaliste, departed France in 1800, sailing via Mauritius before reaching the Cape Leeuwin region of western Australia in May 1801. The expedition's scientific personnel included Fran ois P ron, a zoologist and the principal naturalist, and Louis de Freycinet, the expedition s cartographer. From Cape Leeuwin, the ships proceeded northward, meticulously surveying the coastline and recording detailed observations of the natural history and Indigenous peoples before crossing to Timor. After three months, the expedition continued its surveys along the southern coast of Tasmania before reaching Sydney. They subsequently conducted a thorough exploration of Australia s southern coastline, including what is now South Australia and Victoria, followed by an examination of the northern coast. However, before the expedition s return to France, Baudin died in Mauritius in late 1803.
