Ronald Lewis Steel (March 25, 1931 May 7, 2023) was an American writer, historian, and professor. He is the author of the definitive biography of Walter Lippmann. Steel was an editor for the Scholastic Corporation from 1959 to 1962. By 1960, he had begun writing under the pen name Ronald Steel. After leaving Scholastic, he lived in Europe, working in Paris and London as a writer and translator. Steel was the author of Walter Lippmann and the American Century, the definitive biography of Lippmann. For this book, he was awarded the 1980 National Book Critics Circle Award in General Nonfiction, a National Book Award, the Bancroft Prize, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for History. The book was also nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Biography. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1973. Steel was a professor of International Relations, History, and Journalism at the University of Southern California, where he taught from 1986 to 2008. Before teaching at USC, he taught at Yale University, Rutgers University, Wellesley College, Dartmouth College, George Washington University, UCLA, and Princeton University. Steel wrote for The New Republic in the 1980s. He has written for the Atlantic Monthly and The New York Times. Walter Lippmann (September 23, 1889 December 14, 1974) was an American writer, reporter, and political commentator. With a career spanning 60 years, he is famous for being among the first to introduce the concept of the Cold War, coining the term "stereotype" in the modern psychological meaning, as well as critiquing media and democracy in his newspaper column and several books, most notably his 1922 Public Opinion. Lippmann also played a notable role as research director of Woodrow Wilson's postWorld War I board of inquiry. His views on the role of journalism in a democracy were contrasted with the contemporaneous writings of John Dewey in what has been retrospectively named the LippmannDewey Debate. Lippmann won two Pulitzer Prizes, one for his syndicated newspaper column "Today and Tomorrow" and one for his 1961 interview of Nikita Khrushchev. He has also been highly praised with titles ranging from "most influential" journalist of the 20th century to "Father of Modern Journalism". Michael Schudson writes that James W. Carey considered Walter Lippmann's book Public Opinion as "the founding book of modern journalism" and also "the founding book in American media studies. Walter Lippmann began his career as a brilliant young man at Harvard, studying under George Santayana, taking tea with William James, a radical outsider arguing socialism with anyone who would listen and he ended it in his eighties, writing passionately about the agony of rioting in the streets, war in Asia, and the collapse of a presidency. In between he lived through two world wars, and a depression that shook the foundations of American capitalism. Walter Lippmann (1889-1974) has been hailed as the greatest journalist of his age. For more than sixty years he exerted unprecedented influence on American public opinion through his writing, especially his famous newspaper column "Today and Tomorrow."
