Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Reprint des ersten Archäologiebuch, das bei von Zabern erschienen ist. - Auf das Titelblatt ihres 1848 erschienenen Buches "Das germanische Todtenlager bei Selzen in der Provinz Rheinhessen" haben die Brüder Wilhelm (1806-1848) und Ludwig Iindenschmit (1809-1893) über das poetische Bild einer Eiche, unter der, von Schmetterlingen und Käfern umgaukelt, im hohen Grase Hacke und Spaten, Schädel und Waffen, Gefäße und Schmuck liegen, in harter Prosa den Satz gestellt: "Die Gräber mit Eisenwaffen stammen aus der Zeit der Völkerwanderung". Diese Feststellung klingt uns so selbstverständlich, daß wir aus ihr kaum mehr den Ton des wissenschaftlichen und patriotischen Triumphes heraushören können, der einst in ihr zum Ausdruck kommen sollte; denn die Ausgrabung und Veröffentlichung des "Germanischen Todtenlagers von Selzen" hatten nicht etwa nur das Ziel, ein interessantes Fundmaterial vorzulegen und die wissenschaftliche Diskussion anzuregen, sie sollten vielmehr Probleme lösen, die für das vaterländische Selbstbewußtsein der beiden Brüder nicht weniger wichtig waren als für ihre wissenschaftlichen Bestrebungen. Am deutlichsten bezeichnet diese Probleme der Titel der Schrift, die Wilhelm Lindenschmit 1846 Jacob Grimm zum ersten Germanistentag in Frankfurt überreichte: "Der Vorwelt Räthsel oder: Sind die Deutschen eingewandert? Jänner 1874. - Wilhelm Lindenschmidt ließ sich - nach teils mehrjährigen Aufenthalten in Ausbildung in München, Frankfurt, Antwerpen und Paris (wo er insbesondere von Courbet und den Malern von Barbizon beeinflußt wurde) - 1863 in München nieder, wo er 1869 eine Malschule für Frauen gründete und 1875 zum Akademieprofessor ernannt wurde und "als solcher von bedeutendem Einfluß auf die jüngere Generation" war (Thieme/Becker XXIII, 243).
