Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Parallel to the abolition of Atlantic slavery, new forms of indentured labour stilled global capitalism's need for cheap, disposable labour. The famous 'coolie trade' - mainly Asian labourers transferred to French and British islands in the Indian Ocean, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, as well as to Portuguese colonies in Africa - was one of the largest migration movements in global history. Indentured contract workers are perhaps the most revealing example of bonded labour in the grey area between the poles of chattel slavery and 'free' wage labour. This interdisciplinary volume addresses historically and regionally specific cases of bonded labour relations from the 18th century to sponsorship systems in the Arab Gulf States today.

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Neu. Defoe and the Cultures of Violence. Three hundred years after the publication of "Robinson Crusoe" (1719), Daniel Defoe remains an outstanding figure in the twenty-first-century narrative of English literary history. Despite the unbroken academic interest in Defoe's works, many facets of his fictional texts still remain uncharted. Perhaps most surprisingly, a detailed investigation into aspects of violence and its intertwining with power, class, gender, and race has not been undertaken so far. Defoe's fictional works, as the study shows, display violence as an essential pillar of social interaction, not only on the colonial margins or in the wars on the European continent, although these aspects are the most prominent, but also in the very heart of the emerging nation state itself. Offering an analysis of episodes of violence in "Robinson Crusoe", "Captain Singleton" (1720), "Memoirs of a Cavalier" (1720), "Colonel Jack" (1722), "Moll Flanders" (1722) and "Roxana" (1724), the study aims at contributing to the rich field of scholarly research on one of the most influential English writers in the hitherto neglected area of representations of violence and thereby hopes to offer fresh perspectives. 300 Seiten, gebunden (Anglistische Forschungen; Vol. 408/Universitätsverlag Winter 2010). OHardc. VIII, 277 S. mit Index. - 23,5 x 16. * Hamlet by Olivier, Kaurismäki or Shepard and Pride and Prejudice in its many adaptations show the virulence of these texts and the importance of aesthetic recycling for the formation of cultural identity and diversity. Adaptation has always been a standard literary and cultural strategy, and can be regarded as the dominant means of production in the cultural industries today. Focusing on a variety of aspects such as artistic strategies and genre, but also marketing and cultural politics, this volume takes a critical look at ways of adapting and appropriating cultural texts across epochs and cultures in literature, film and the arts. - Tadellos erhaltene Dublette aus der Privatbibliothek von Prof. Dr. Aleida Assmann (Universität Konstanz) !

Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: New. London post-2010 in British Literature and Culture explores cultural and literary representations of London since around 2010 and focuses on a period in which a string of celebratory national and global media events, but also riots and anti-capitalist protests have cemented London's status as a paradigmatic world city. This collection of articles brings together a wide variety of topics, such as the 2011 London riots, the London Olympics of 2012, royal festivities, the Tube anniversary, memorials, and London in recent novels and blockbuster films. The contributions look at the way in which cultural and literary texts articulate competing versions of the contemporary city, oscillating between either supporting or subverting the hegemonic narrative of London as a place of cosmopolitan harmony and inclusion.
