Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Raphael Collin (illustratore). Attractive faded brown purplish silky cloth covers. Spine is more worn with rumples and a paper label; printed black and red, readable, but edge worn on right side, extending a couple inches below the label. Rear lower corner bumped but straightened, with the rest and top and bottom edges of spine in good shape. Pages are clean with quality heavy paper bright and in very good shape, and only a small bit of foxing, mostly to the tissue covers of a few of the illustrations. Fine engravings throughout, all tissue protected; some are whole-page and some in-text, in various color tintings. Hinges and binding solid. No markings. The frontispiece is a fine color illustration of Daphnis and Chloe. This copy is number 312 of 550 limited printings for the Salon Edition. No date but printed in the late 1890's (1896 seems to be the date). About 6.5 x 10.2 in (16.6 x 26 cm).

The OG author was a Greek writer Longus, from the Aegean island Lesbos from 2nd century AD. A bucolic life story of a boy Daphnis and a girl Chloe, abandoned by their parents, and raised by the shepherds. Since the 16th century when the text was first published the novel laid a foundation to the Renaissance pastoral novel. But one page of the manuscript was missing. It was found mysteriously in Laurenziana in 1809 by Paul Louis Courier (1772-1825). The novel was exceptionally inspirational for art and literature. The present copy was illustrated by a French Academic illustrator Raphael Collin (1850-1916), who was famous for teaching Japanese artists visiting Paris for art studies (Kuroda Seiki, Kume Keiichiro and Okada Saburosuke). The book binding is in French biedermeier style by Louis Guétant (1848-1936) who was a president of the "Chambre Syndicale de reliure de Lyon". Text in French. 1 volume complete. In 8vo. 24,6x16cm. VIII, 190pp. 12 engraved b&w plates, numerous engraved vignettes and text-ends. The contents are clean. Elegant book binding. Brown Morocco leather.
