From the Library of Sir Edward Henry Scott (1842-83) with armorial bookplate. The Edinburgh Review American Edition 1880 p116 describes how Lord Grenville at the request of his nephew Rev George Neville examined the six volumes written in fine script and recognized it as short-hand. Lord Grenville recommended that they find somebody who would take on the task to transcript. Lord Grenville also offered to provide his alphabet and arbitrary signs as well as transcribe the first 'three or four pages'. Rev Neville assigned the task to Mr Smith, then an undergraduate at St. Johns. The Review goes on explaining that it occupied Rev. John Smith (1799-1870) nearly three years and often twelve to fourteen hours a day. The transcript was eventually handed over by Rev. Very small marginal tear on p39/40 in volume one and with a slight fold in the page. A fresh clean copy of very attractive set expertly re-backed. A nice production printed by S and R. Bentley.

In good condition, lightly aged and folded twice. Good neat signature: 'Braybrooke'. The recipient is not named, but the name of the editor of the work mentioned by B…raybrooke is given as 'C. .S.' He thanks him for 'the curious Memoir of Ambrose Barnes which has just been transmitted to me through Sir Francis Freeling', and assures him that 'it shall be carefully preserved amongst the other valuable Tracts with which you have been so good as to enrich my Collection'. He hopes that when he revisits Cambridge he will 'see Audley End in a less unfavourable state than it must have appeared last September'. The letter ends: 'I trust you have not given up exploring Parochial Registers for the benefit of antiquarians'.

With an owner name of Ralph Neville and a note on a free front endpaper stating that this copy was printed for correction before the plates and iillustrations were finished, and they are thus missing. The title page states…that the Diary was deciphered by the Reverend John Smith of St. John's College from the original short-hand ms. in the Pepysian Library and a selection from his private correpondence. Beautifully bound in three quarter burgundy leather with burgundy cloth covers. Covers have gilt rulings along the edges of the leather. The spine has six gilt edged compartments with title, volume number, the notation "proof sheets," and the date. Newer pastedowns and free front and rear endpapers. A label affixed to the front pastedown has the initials "AHA" - presumably the owner or the binder. All page edges are gilt. Light spotting to initial pages and often sporadically throughout. Some text page areas have browning but the margins are clean and bright except for the sporadic spotting, particularly on pages 159-167. The first page of the first chapter has a ight pencil circle indicating that a portrait would be placed there. A nice copy in a beautiful custom binding. Measures 9 x 12 inches. 498 pages plus a General Index with xlix pages. ENGHIST/080125.

Joints good condition sound, gently worn. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition full polished calf with double gilt filet, marked, scratched and worn. Page edges good condition top edge gilt, others tanned and foxed. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition secure, strained to the gutter after the end paper of Vol I, secure. Paste downs good condition marbled, bookplate. End papers good condition marbled and subsequently tanned and foxed. Title good condition tanned, with minor foxing. Volume 2: frontispiece engraving of Pepys' Library in York Buildings (Nevill/Cooper), printed title-page with device; pp. [1]-311; Volume 2 is illustrated with 5 engraved plates (with a total of 7 portraits). All the plates show various degrees of tanning or brown-spotting (foxing), with transfer of the images to the facing pages. Both volumes are bound without the half-tiles (as is usual). Bound in full, contemporary, brown Russia leather, with three, flat raised bands on the spines; gilt-lettered titles, and richly gilt designs in compartments, with gilt borders around the covers, and large, gilt designs in the corners; gilt line borders on cover edges, inner leather turn-ins. All edges gilt, green headbands, and dark blue silk bookmarkers, bound in; dark blue-green, coated endpapers, with an early bookseller's label in the upper left corner of the front paste-downs: Jas Sage Bookseller. 4. Newmans Row, Lincolns Inn Fields., and a former owner's small book label: Raymond E. Hughes. The bindings are unsigned, but are of high-quality from the 1825-1850 period. The spine of the first volume has been skillfully re-backed in leather, with the original leather spine laid down. The spine ends, outer hinges, cover edges and corners show light wear, or rubbing (the top edge of the back cover of volume one, shows some abrasions to the leather surface, as do the lower edges, and cover corners, of both volumes). Some light, scattered tanning, or tan-spotting to some page margins. "Pepys commenced his diary in January of 1660, stopped May 1669 on account of his eyesight. Written in Shelton's system of shorthand which Pepys probably learned as a boy in college. It was first deciphered between 1819 and 1822 by John Smith, afterward rector of Baldock, then an undergraduate of St. John's. In 1825 about half of the transcript was edited by Lord Braybrooke and published as the first edition. Unquestionably one of the world's greatest human documents."
