Er gilt als einer der tüchtigsten Offiziere der Kriegsmarine, war nicht nur in den verschiedensten Marineverwendungen und im Landkrieg erfolgreich und vielfach ausgezeichnet tätig, sondern auch als Schriftsteller äußerst produktiv und international angesehen.
