Autograph book lovingly assembled by a young baseball fan in 1931 at Yankee Stadium, with over 40 autographs of players, including Ruth and Gehrig and eight other members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Imagine being a kid in 1931 and you're a baseball fan. This was during the glory days of baseball, when players were national heroes, and big games were national news. You also happen to live in New York, the center of the baseball universe, with a heated rivalry between three local teams every year. If you were lucky enough to go to a few games, perhaps you could get close to one of your heroes, maybe even get an autograph. Young Seymour Kessler did much better than "get an autograph" he carried a little booklet with him to games at Yankee Stadium in 1931 and collected over forty autographs of players, including the biggest stars of the day Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig along with eight other Hall-of-Famers including Charlie Gehringer, Lefty Gomez, Earle Combs, Tony Lazzeri, and others. He carefully and lovingly curated his autograph collection, pasting pictures from newspapers beneath the signatures (whenever he could find them) and writing in clean block letters the position and team of the player. He titled his booklet on the cover "Autographs of Baseball Players / Yankee Stadium / 1931 / Property of Seymour Kessler" and on the first page added, with great care to make the writing neat: "An autograph collection of American League Baseball Players. The autographs were obtained during the 1931 season at the Yankee Stadium, The Bronx, New York. Property of Seymour Kessler. 1858 West 5th Street Brooklyn, New York." It's a remarkable collection of names and autographs a snapshot of many of the stars of the American League and so lovingly curated by Kessler. He brings us right back to being a kid and a baseball fan, sharing the magic of meeting your heroes. 1931, by the way, wasn't all wonderful for young Seymour. The Yankees only finished in second place, and it must have been challenging for him living in Brooklyn and being a Yankees fan (although in 1931 the Brooklyn team was called "The Robins", only becoming the Dodgers in 1932). Kessler was able to find newspaper pictures of many of the players, but not all of them. Generally, if they were minor players or out-of-town players he had difficulty finding pictures. Rubbed with wear at the extremities and hinges a touch loose, very good. 1924 Columbia Yearbook featuring photos and accounts of Lou Gehrig's exploits on the baseball team during his second and final year at Columbia. Gehrig is pictured at least three times in the book and mentioned in print elsewhere: "He is now the property of the New York Yankees, and sage old scouts of the national pastime predict a bright future for him." Good call, sage old scouts.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First and only edition. 1923 Columbia College yearbook. Bookplate, light edgewear on the boards and the front hinge weakened, but a sound, very good copy. Initially, Gehrig could not play baseball for Columbia because he had played baseball for a summer professional league during his freshman year, not knowing that doing so jeopardized his eligibility to play collegiate sports. Gehrig was, however, ruled eligible to play on the Lions' football team and was a standout fullback and tackle. He later gained baseball eligibility and joined the Lions on that squad as well. This yearbook features photographs and accounts of his days on the football team during the 1922 season. Gehrig is pictured at least twice and is lauded for his "consistent line-plunging," although his efforts could not prevent the season from being "an unmitigated failure, with few, if any, redeeming qualities." Other notables pictured include the authors Corey Ford and Henry Morton Robinson, and Walter Koppisch, Gehrig's teammate, who was later elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.

Near fine photo, with some light rippling to bottom edge, and light toning to verso of photo. Overall, a great photo, featuring DiMaggio in his rookie season. The caption on the verso of this photo states: "These heavy-hitting fence-busters are expected to send many a cocky opposition pitcher to the showers during the coming World Series." This proved prophetic, as the team defeated the New York Giants in the 1936 World Series in 6 games. Joe DiMaggio had an exceptional rookie season with the Yankees, hitting a then-franchise record for a rookie of 29 home runs (Aaron Judge broke the record in 2017, with 52 home runs). DiMaggio played all thirteen seasons of his career with the New York Yankees and was selected as an All-Star thirteen times. With his exemplary hitting and fielding (he was nicknamed "The Yankee Clipper" because of how he sailed around the outfield) he helped power the Yankees to nine World Series titles. He holds the record for the longest hitting streak, at 56 games, which is considered one of the most statistically remarkable records in all of sports. Other Hall of Famers featured in this photo include Yankee great Lou Gehrig, 11x All-Star Bill Dickey, and 5x World Series champion Tony Lazzeri.
