A richly illustrated 17th-century French translation of Lucanâs Pharsalia, or De Bello Civili â" the epic recounting the civil wars between Caesar and Pompey. Translated into French verse by Georges de Brà beuf (1618â"1661), this version was admired in its day for its poetic elegance and rhetorical intensity. This Paris edition…of 1670 is handsomely produced, with an engraved allegorical frontispiece and a full-page engraved plate introducing each of the ten books. These dramatic copper engravings vividly depict battles, omens, and episodes from the Roman civil war, enhancing the appeal of the volume. Bound in contemporary mottled calf with gilt spine compartments. The volume shows some wear â" rubbing to boards, loss to head of spine, and tender joints â" but remains structurally sound. The textblock is clean and the plates are strong impressions with good contrast. On the title page is an early ownership inscription noting Brà beufâs name and dates. A scarce illustrated French edition of Lucanâs Pharsalia, combining classical literature with 17th-century book arts. Desirable for collectors of French classical translations, emblematic engravings, and the literature of Romeâs civil wars. The allegorical engraved frontispiece bears an early manuscript annotation in ink at the head margin (âBornot scripsit, â¦â), providing evidence of historical ownership or readership. Such marginalia enhances the provenance and character of this copy. Cette collection fut imprimée par Pierre Didot l'Ainé dans le souci d'en faire la remplaçante et l'égale par sa perfection typographique des éditions de petits formats exécutées par les Elzévirs au XVIIème siècle. Elle donne aussi l'un des textes les plus corrects, confié au bon soin de Jean-Augustin Amar du Rivier (1765 - 1837), homme de lettres, professeur émérite et traducteur, il enseigna les belles-lettres dans plusieurs collèges, notamment au lycée Henri IV, et fut nommé en 1803 conservateur de la bibliothèque Mazarine. La collection se compose de 45 volumes publiés de 1821 à 1826 regroupant les principaux auteurs latins : Tacitus, Sallustius, Nepos, Florus, Plinius secundus, Cicero pour les prosateurs et Terentius, Lucresius, Virgilius, Prospertius, Horatius, Ovidius, Phaedrus, Lucanus pour les poètes. Lucain (en latin Marcus Annaeus Lucanus, 39 - 65 ap. J.-C.) est un poète latin fécond, neveu du philosophe Sénèque, dont seule une oeuvre nous est parvenue : le Bellum civile (La Guerre civile), que la tradition a pérennisé sous le titre de Pharsale, une épopée en 10 chants, demeurée inachevée, sur la guerre civile ayant opposé César à Pompée au Ier siècle avant notre ère. Pharsale fut la ville où César vainquit Pompée. Ramsden -103 - Fléty - 91. Dos légérement passé, rousseurs à la fin du tome Ier et au tout début du tome II.

Belle édition elzévirienne de 'La Pharsale' de Lucain, dans la traduction du poète normand Georges de Brébeuf (1617-1661), traduction qui constitua un véritable événemen…t littéraire de son temps et qui fit date. Elle est illustrée d'un frontispice gravé signé "P.P.F." pour Pieter Philippe fecit et d'un fleuron de titre à la marque du Solitaire. Ce poème épique, par lequel Brébeuf établit sa réputation, est divisé en dix livres, les huit premiers ont pour argument la guerre entre César et Pompée, les deux derniers relatent les expéditions d'Afrique et d'Égypte. "Plutôt qu'une traduction, son ouvrage est une imitation libre, une paraphrase, son dessein étant, dit-il, d'égaler son modèle (). Il y avait entre son imagination et celle de Lucain des affinités naturelles" ('Dictionnaire des lettres françaises', p. 211). (Rahir, 'Elzevier', 827. Willems, 827: "Édition fort bien exécutée"). Joli exemplaire, bien relié, très frais.

Une ancienne étiquette de librairie des signatures et des notes manuscrites sur les pages de gardes, traces d'encre sur la tranche supérieure, des feuillets un peu salis, reliure restaurée sur le dernier plat, début de fente sur les mors, quelques trous de ver sur le cuir et dans l'ouvrage (sans atteinte au texte). Lucain (en latin Marcus Annaeus Lucanus), né le 3 novembre 39 à Cordoue, en Hispanie ultérieure, et mort le 30 avril 65, est un poète latin dont la seule uvre conservée, La Pharsale, est une épopée sur la guerre civile ayant opposé Jules César à Pompée entre 49 et 48 av. J.-C. Il se suicide à 25 ans, sur l'ordre de Néron.
