Contemporary mottled calf, five raised bands on spine, edges of the text block decoratively sprinkled in red, title label in the second panel (partly flaked off). A worn copy -- but unrestored and unsophistica…ted. There is damage and some lose to the uppermost and lowest spine panels, front paste-down has some erasures (and a bookseller's label [E. Droz, Paris]; lacks front free-endpaper. There are no endpapers remaining but the text is complete, and the sewing and attachment of the boards is sound and secure. There is a faint remnant of a rubber stamp to the first "Avertissement" leaf following the title page (no text is legible). Otherwise, the only mark is a small oval bookseller's ticket of the "Librairie E. Droz, Paris." mounted at the bottom of the front paste-down. Georges de Brébeuf [1618-1661] is probably best remembered for a verse translation of the Pharsailia of Lucan, written in 1654. This work was admired by Pierre Corneille (a friend) but attacked by the much-younger Nicolas Boileau. (Boileau grew up with a chip on his shoulder, adopting as a mission " a hatred of stupid books.") It must be said that Boileau significantly modified his opinion of Brébeuf -- ("Malgré son fatras obscur, souvent Brébeuf étincelle" -- which Wikipedia translates as "Despite his obscure gobblygook, Brébeuf often shines"). This 1662 edition contains the full text of one of the most notable examples of Brébeuf's early "précieuses" manner -- Gageure ou Cent Cinquante Epigrammes et Madrigaux contre une femme fardée, 150 epigrams and madrigals against a woman wearing make-up -- [see pp. 49-129]. The author, whose health had never been secure, withdrew from his place in Parisian society and retreated to his native Normandy. His subsequent works are mainly meditations contemplating peace, nature and piety. The first edition of his Poésies diverses takes the form of a small quarto published in Paris in 1658. This small, elegant edition in duodecimo format, dated 1662, was stated on the title page to have been "Imprimee s a` Rouen, et se vendent a Paris Chez Antoine de Sommauille." The situation was clarified by a statement at the base of page vi: "Cette edition acheue e d'imprimer le dernier iour de may 1662. A Rouen, par L. Maurry. Et ce sur la copie que l'autheur auoit reueue & corrige e peu auant sa mort." The extent to which any corrections and emendations by Brébeuf are preserved in this pages is deserving of further study. Apart from textual considerations, this little book was beautifully set and printed, with a dazzling assortment of printer's type ornaments cleverly used to frame texts on most pages. it would appear that our volume, set and pulled from his press by the fine Rouen printer L. Maurry -- shows off his talent and skills throughout to his great credit and advantage, Perhaps Maurry hoped to generate commisions from the Parisian book trade. His compact 1662 masterpiece richly earned separate mention in the major bibliographical references covering the author, Georges de Brébeuf -- [see Brunet 1216; Graesse I: 526].

Condizione: Bon état. petit in-12, maroquin rouge, dos à nerfs, guirlande dorée en encadrement des caissons ornés d'un fleuron doré central, guirlande dorée en encadrement des plats aux armes, 7 ff. (épître et avertissement) + 341 pp. Épopée traduite par Georges de Brébeuf (1617-1661) dont c'est l'oeuvre majeure, saluée par Corn…eille, mais critiquée par Boileau. Bonne reliure d'époque aux armes de François de Rignac, procureur du roi en la cour des aides de Montpellier, à sa devise "Semper in Altum". On relève en fin de volume l'ex-libris manuscrit d'un capitaine du régiment Royal-Roussillon cavalerie daté de 1703. Coins usés et dorure un peu ternie, mais charmant exemplaire.
