A charming historical children's story of the days of our Saxon forefathers, following the adventures and experiences of Cerdic the Saxon. With reference to the Danes and their arrival on British shores. Written by Herbert Strang, the pseudonym of two English authors, George Herbert Ely and Charles James L'Estrange, who specialized in writing adventure stories for boys, both historical and modern-day, and Lucy L. Weedon, a British author of children's stories. In the original cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor creases to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. School bookplate to the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with minor age toning to the endpapers. Very Good. book.

"Nister hat sich als Lithograph und Kunstdrucker in Nürnberg niedergelassen und von dort aus lange Reisen unternommen, um den europäischen und den amerikanischen Buchmarkt zu erforschen. Das Interesse des englischen Publikums schien seinen eigenen Interessen am meisten zu entsprechen, denn 1888 gründete er in London einen Kinderbuchverlag. Das Bildmaterial ließ er von englischen Illustratoren anfertigen und auch mit englischem Text versehen. Die Drucklegung sowie Fertigung der mit seinem Namen eng verbundenen'Dissolving and Revolving Pictures' ließ er in Nürnberg durchführen" (Laub/Krahe, Spielbilderbücher S. 18). Im Druckvermerk am Ende "Printed in Bavaria". Die 6 Aufklapptafeln zeigen ähnlich wie in einem Zoo, Tier hinter einem Gitter: Löwe mit Jungen, Hirsch mit Jungen, Leopard mit seinen Jungen, Affenkäfig mit spielenden Affen und außerhalb eine Vorrichtung mit 5 Papageien, ein Bär und ein Elefant, bei dem außerhalb ein Äffchen dem Elefant einen Apfel reicht. - Bibliographisch war dieses Werk für mich nicht nachweisbar. - Bemerkenswert gut erhalten; so frühe Nisterbücher sind von großer Seltenheit.

[1-48] pp. Mounted color frontispiece, numerous black and white line drawings throughout the text by Louis Wain, W. Foster and others. The penultimate story in the book by C[lifton] B[ingham] 'A Frog he would a fishing Go' illustrated with ten charming line drawings, nine of them by Beatrix Potter, each one signed 'HBP'. The book also contains a separate full-page illustration of "Sqintina Tabby" to accompany "The Story of Violante and the Silver Sixpence", after a pen and grisaille drawing heightened with gouache by Potter. Beatrix Potter's uncle Sir Henry and Aunt Lucy Roscoe owned a cat called Squintina or Squinty. Potter's frog illustrations appeared in two collections by Nister this year: the present publication and the Holiday Annual. Original dark blue cloth backed glazed pictorial boards. Pale blue floral endpapers. The front cover with a very colorful scene depicting four young cats visiting the local [cat] storekeeper. Contemporary pencil ownership inscription on half title dated 1896. Extremities of boards a little worn otherwise an excellent copy of this extremely scarce Beatrix Potter/Louis Wain item.
