Il romanzo di padre Luigi Previti, basato su un feuilleton di Albert Du Casse, ufficiale francese e storico militare, compara gli eventi della vicenda narrata, che si svolge durante la Prima guerra carlista (1833-1840) a quelli della Terza (1872-1876), che si stava svolgendo nel periodo in cui il "Il volontario di Zumalacárregui" veniva redatto.
