Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - WOORD VOORAF -- Een jaar geleden, enkele dagen na het uitroepen van de onaf-hankelijkheid van Kongo, verspreidde zieh de mare van de dood van André Ryckmans. -- De jonge natie had, bij haar geboorte, het offer van één harer hechtste en bekwaamste v…rienden geëist. -- Twintig jaar vroeger, op een mei-avond van 1940, klonk over de radio de stem van Gouvemeur-Generaal Pierre Ryckmans. Bij de brousse-bewoners, geschokt door een ander ontredderend gebeuren, verzwonden iedere aarzeling en iedere twijfel ; de plicht leek hen nu duidelijk omschreven in zijn eenvoud. Een man had het bewijs geleverd tegen de omstandigheden opge-wassen te zijn. -- Als drager van een grote naam, erfde André Ryckmans een tra-ditie van plichtsbesef, van rüstige moed en van een scherpe zin voor de menselijke problematiek. Vöör als na 30 juni 1960 volgde hij slechts de weg die deze eigenschappen en zijn geweten hem voorschreven. -- Deze eigenschappen bleken o.m. uit de strenge ernst waarmede de jonge gewestbeheerder zieh van zijn taak kweet en zieh daarbij met succès om de Studie van de volksgroepen tussen dewelke hij leefde, beijverde . . begrijpen om te dienen. -- Elders reeds werd hulde gebracht aan de mens, aan de gewest-ambtenaar. en met hem aan de Gewestdienst waarvan men nu pas beseft in welke mate hij Kongo heeft gemaakt.
