Marcel Emerit met à mal la légende glorieuse de la conquête coloniale, celle de Bugeaud tout particulièrement. Il n'aime pas les statues ; tout au contraire, il prend plaisir à les déboulonner ; il y a du niveleur chez cet homme.…Et il ne s'agit pas non plus d'Abd-el-Kader, mais de l'Algérie ; la plus grande audace est de rompre avec la célébration des grands hommes et avec la suffisance étatique d'une version étroitement militaire et politique de l'histoire. Pour ce qui est d'Abd-el-Kader, c'est à peine le chef d'une entreprise d'État, le constructeur de places fortes ou l'organisateur militaire qui intéresse Marcel Emerit. Abd-el-Kader est de son temps et témoigne de la hiérarchie de classes et de statuts qui supporte les discriminations et les conflits qui se traduisent en «luttes de races». Marcel Emerit entend comprendre l'Algérie de l'intérieur, en faisant parler les documents d'époque. Ce qui l'occupe, ce n'est ni les détours diplomatiques ou les cachotteries des négociations, ni les ressorts de la psychologie des acteurs qui jouent les premiers rôles, mais l'histoire sociale qui pose la question nationale. Il a travaillé à dire le vrai et le sens de l'histoire coloniale ; ce pourquoi il fut dénoncé et tenu à l'écart (Présentation de René Gallissot).
