Hardback. Condizione: Fine. Marsh, Honoria D. (illustratore). Limited edition of 1000 copies. "Shades from Jane Austen" is a lovely, and lovingly made, book created as a tribute to Austen in 1975 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the novelist's birth. And it is sure to be of particular interest as we close out the 250th anniversary in 2025. The author and main illustrator, Honoria D. Marsh, was taken with the art of silhouette, an extremely popular way to render the likeness of a person in Austen's time. Silhouettes were cheap but effective alternatives to miniature portraits, made by casting a strong light on a person sitting in profile so that the artist could draw the outline of their features and then fill in the outline with black. Silhouettes could be extremely detailed, even down to the lace the sitters wore, and though the poses usually were simple busts, they sometimes took the form of active scenes with props, pets, and landscaping. Marsh decided to use the technique in this book to illustrate the characters Austen described in her books. But Marsh took verisimilitude to the next level. Now only did she add color paintings of clothing to the black faces and bodies she profiled, she drew not from her imagination but from live models. More than that, her models were contemporary descendants of the Austen family whenever she could convince them to pose for her, as well as others associated with Austen, such as the president of the Jane Austen Society in 1975. She identifies her models in the captions to the plateswhich range in size from full-page to small enough to fit in the wide page marginsas well as the names of the characters they portray, who appear pictorially as they appear in the excerpts of Austen's text that she provides. Even better, "Shades of Jane Austen" kicks off with a previously published chapter by Peggy Hickman titled "Silhouettes of Jane Austen's Family," which includes an Austen family tree and a chronology of events during Jane Austen's life. Hickman owned a collection of silhouettes of members of the Austen family, which are included here, along with silhouettes of family members that come from other collections. In other words, readers get to enjoy actual silhouette portraits of actual Austens, as well as the silhouette portraits of Marianne and Margaret Dashwood ("Sense and Sensibility"), Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett ("Pride and Prejudice"), and charactersmajor and minorfrom all of Austen's books. It is if these are the images one might see hanging on the walls of their homes if one could walk into their world. "Shades from Jane Austen" has been in high demand with Austenphiles since it was originally published, but it has never been released in mass market form. Instead, the author and publisher preferred to issue it in several different limited editions, each with distinct bindings. Our copy is bound with pale blue silk, stamped in gold. A publisher's note of the reverse of the title page says it is number 506 of an edition limited to 1,000 copies. (A word of warning: We have noticed that the appearance of the binding fabric seems to vary with the lighting, and it may appear a bit tan or gray in photographs as a result.) There is only the tiniest bit of wear along the bottom edges of the covers. The front and back have a gold filigreed frame stamped around the edges, and the title and a silhouette of, presumably, Jane Austen are also stamped in gold on the front cover and on the spine. The stamping is still quite bright and unworn. There is a crease in the fabric of the front cover just above the title, which appears to be a result of the manufacturing process. There is a small spot of light soiling on the back cover and very light sunning to the spine; otherwise the binding is unmarred. It is protected by a clear mylar dust jacket. The endpapers are of a lovely light aqua color and are unmarked, as are all the other pages in the book, except for a blank page after the front flyleaf, which has some light pencil writing by a previous seller. The binding is tight and square.
