In deze periode profileerde hij zich nog als een religieus-socialistische idealist die met een dromerige en lyrische stijl de spanning tussen de harde alledaagse realiteit en de transcendente wereld van de geest trachtte te overbruggen. De bundel markeert een onschuldige fase in het leven van een auteur wiens latere carrière volledig werd overschaduwd door zijn radicalisering en collaboratie tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, waardoor dit werk tegenwoordig vaak wordt gelezen als een melancholisch contrast met zijn latere politieke keuzes als NSB-burgemeester.…
