Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Twenty (of 21) colour printed maps, all 1st editions. Varying sizes, folded and stored in their original printed buff envelopes 24x30cm. The maps are mostly fine, neatly folded. I-207A has previous owner's ink stamp to lower right corner and some spotting. I-210A is VG with some rubbing along folds. The envelopes are good to near fine with some creasing and closed tears. I-216A is ink stamped "without relief" to the front. This series was one of the most significant products of the groundbreaking mapping project USGS conducted for the Saudi Government with Aramco during 1956-63. This mapped Saudi Arabia in 21 Quadrangles on a 1/500K scale with one series for geology (I-200A to I-220A) and another for geography (I-200B to I-220B). It involved some of the most eminent geologists of the day, among them Glen Brown (USGS), Richard Bramkamp and Max Steineke (Aramco's early pioneers). This series provided the foundation for the Saudi Arabian Mineral Exploration Project launched in 1963, coordinated by Brown from Jeddah, guiding fieldwork, and generating a series of Technical Letters and Reports. Included here are 20 of the 21 Quadrangles (I-208A Western Persian Gulf not present), but also including strategic and sensitive parts of Abu Dhabi and Oman before frontiers had been defined. Titled and captioned in English and Arabic, each has a detailed geologic commentary, compilation sources, glossary, compilation sources, cross sections, and Index Map. Features include settlements (including forts, ruins, cultivated areas, date gardens). Transport covers from roads to camel trails, rail and landing fields. Among these are named ancient routes such as the Darb Zubaydah, Darb al Khaif, and Darb al Hajj (eg I-202A). Hydrographic features include wells, drilled water wells, wadis etc. Hypsographic features include types of sand, terrain, sabhkah, silt flats etc. QUADRANGLES: I-200A Wadi as Sirhan (Bramkamp, Brown, Holm, Layne, 1963, 142x112cm) // I-201A Jawf-Sakakah (Bramkamp, Ramirez, Steineke, Reiss, 1963, 103x108cm) // I-202A Darb Zubaydah (Bramkamp, Ramirez, 1963, 104x103) // I-203A Wadi al Batin (Bramkamp, Ramirez, 1959, 102x103cm). Includes Kuwait City, Basrah. // I-204A Northwestern Hijaz (Brown, Jackson, Bogue, Elberg, 1963, 128x103cm). Includes Yanbu. // I-205A Northeastern Hijaz (Brown, Lane, Goudarzi, Maclean, 1963, 104x110cm). Includes Riyadh. // I-209A Central Persian Gulf (Bramkamp and Ramirez, 1961, 104x106cm). Covering the Arabian coast from central and eastern Qatar to Al Jirab island, and the Persian coast (including its geology) from the islands of Jabrin to Jazireh-Ye Qeys. // I-210A Southern Hijaz (Brown, Jackson, Bogue, Maclean, 1963, 128x120cm). Including Mecca, Jeddah, Taif etc. // I-211A Southern Najd (Jackson, Bogue, Brown, Gierhart, 1963, 104x114cm) // I-212A Southern Tuwayq (Bramkamp, Gierhart, Brown, Jackson, 1956, 107x107cm) // I-213A Northwestern Rub al Khali (Bramkamp, Ramirez, 1959, 104x102cm) // I-214A Eastern Rub al Khali (Bramkamp, Ramirez, 1961, 104x103cm) including parts of Abu Dhabi and Oman: Hafit, Liwa Oasis, Jebel Akhdar, Ibri, Fahud etc. // I-215A Eastern Rub al Khali (Elberg, Gierhart, Ramirez, 1963, 106x104cm) // I-216A Tihamat Ash Sham (Brown, Jackson, 1958, 106x105cm) // I-217A Asir (Brown, Jackson, 1959, 107x107cm) // I-218A Western Rub al Khali (Bramkamp, Gierhart, Owens, Ramirez, 1963, 110x103cm) // I-219A South Central Rub al Khali (Ramirez, Elberg, Helley, 1963, 107x104cm) // I-220A Southeastern Rub al Khali (Ramirez, Elberg, Helley, 1963, 111x103cm).

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. One of the most significant sheets in the series. Colour printed map 82x103cm, folded in its original buff printed envelope 24x30cm. Map fine, envelope very good. This sheet covers the Gulf coast from Safaniyah to the western side of Qatar, including all of Bahrain, and the key Aramco locations of Al Khobar, Dhahran, Dammam, Jubail, Ras Tanura, etc. Also shown are major installations, among them the Trans-Arabian Pipeline with its parallel Tapline Road, and the Al Qatif-Al Qaysumah Pipeline that feeds into it, and the Saudi Government Railroad to the lower edge. Among significant local sites are the port of Uqair, Hofuf Oasis, and the Darb Al Uqayr connecting them, and other ancient camel trails including Darb Huwwijan, Darb Mazalij, Darb Mikhyat, and Darb Az Zuayyini. No Binding. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. A set of four adjoining US Army K462 Series colour printed maps, including the very significant Western Persian Gulf sheet. Each approx 85x100cm, adapted from Aramco-USGS originals. All stated first editions, first printings dated Feb 1964 (Edition 1-AMS). Good overall. Neatly folded with pinholes to some corners and edges, some wear along folds, occasional small areas of staining, and the original USGS map numbers in ms to the edges. The originals were prepared as part of the groundbreaking USGS-Aramco mapping exercise for the Saudi Government during 1956-63. One of its main products was a series of Geographic maps divided into 21 Quadrangles on a 1/500K scale, numbered I-200B to I-220B. These along with their geological equivalents were designed to support exploration and exploitation of petroleum, minerals, and groundwater. Evidenced by this set, the Geographic series also proved highly valuable to the US Army's Corps of Engineers, which was supporting Saudi Arabia through a massive long-term construction and infrastructure development programme. The AMS additions include a Universal Transverse Mercator grid, and marginal data revised to 1963. The maps are labelled in English and Arabic, including a Glossary, sources of base compilation, and Index Map. Details include international boundaries (where they exist), settlements of various sizes (including ruins, date gardens, and cultivated areas); transport (rail and stations, types of road and camel tracks, landing fields and airports). Hydrogaphic features include wells, wadis etc. Hypsographic features include descriptions of different types of sand terrain. Miscellaneous features include oil and gas installations. The sheets adjoin in 2 rows of 2, between them covering the area bounded by Safaniyah (NW), Gezdan (NE), Uruq (SE), and Al Arawik (SW), taking in all of Qatar and Bahrain, parts of Saudi Arabia and Iran, and parts of what would become the UAE. SHEETS: (1) NG 39-W: Western Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar. Copied from Map I-208B originally prepared in 1958 by a joint Aramco-USGS team including Max Steineke, TF Harriss, KR Parsons, and EL Berg. This covers the Gulf coast from Safaniyah to the western half of Qatar, including all of Bahrain, and the key Aramco locations including Al Khobar, Dhahran, Dammam, Jubail, Ras Tanura, Abqaiq, etc. Installations include the Trans-Arabian Pipeline with Tapline Road and the Al Qatif-Al Qaysumah Pipeline that feeds into it, with the Saudi Government Railroad to the lower edge. Among significant local sites are the port of Uqair, Hofuf Oasis, and the Darb Al Uqayr connecting them, and other ancient camel trails including Darb Huwwijan, Darb Mazalij, Darb Mikhyat, and Darb Az Zuayyini. Installations and settlements are also shown in Bahrain and Qatar, with partially defined maritime boundaries. // (2) NG 39-E: Central Persian Gulf, Arabia, Iran. Copied from Map I-209B originally prepared in 1959 by Aramco's Richard Bramkamp and Leon Ramirez. Extending eastward from NG 39-W, this covers the Arabian coast from the eastern half of Qatar to Ar Ruways, and the Iranian coast from the islands of Jabrin to Jazireh-ye Qeys. // (3) NF 39-W: Northwestern Rub al Khali, Saudi Arabia. Copied from Map I-213B originally prepared in 1959 by Bramkamp and Ramirez. This is the continuation inland of NG 39-W. // (4) NF 39-E: Northeastern Rub al Khali, Saudi Arabia. Copied from Map I-214B originally prepared in 1959 by Bramkamp and Ramirez. Extending westward from NF 39-W and southwards from NG 39-E.
