El propio Mendo dijo: 'Vilos atentamente, aun antes de darse a la estampa, por averseme cometido su censura y aprobacion, para imprimirlos. Admiré la noticia, erudicion y copia; pero advirtiendo, que a muchos el Latin en semejantes materias no lisongea el gusto, y lo difuso las ocasiona tedio, me pareció buena ocasión de hazer un abstracto en nuestro Idioma, y entresacando los assumptos más selectos, y con otro metodo, disposición, y estilo, añadiendo muchas observaciones mías, formar un breve epilogo, que con facilidad se manejase.' Mendo publicó su Príncipe perfecto en 1657 (Salamanca, Diego de Cosio), habiendo fallecido ya Solórzano, sin ningún tipo de ilustración gráfica. En algún momento debió conseguir las planchas de los 100 emblemas que se habían impreso en la edición madrileña de los Emblemata de Solórzano, porque en 1661 Boissat y Remeus imprimeron en su taller de Lyon una segunda edición del Príncipe perfecto, revisada, corregida y ampliada por su autor, precediendo cada uno de los 80 documentos en los que se estructuraba la obra con uno de los emblemas de los que aparecían en la obra de Solórzano. A unos pocos ejemplares de esta impresión lyonesa fraguada en 1661, los impresores les dispusieron una portada en rojo y negro, con la fecha de 1661, con un grabado representando la Anunciación, a la que seguía en 2 una dedicatoria a la reina de Francia. Gli 80 capitoli in cui e suddiviso il testo sono inoltre tutti preceduti da una graziosa incisione a mezza pagina. Solida legatura coeva in mezza pergamena con piccole punte e titoli su tassello al dorso. Qualche macchietta sparsa e poche tracce d'uso, complessivamente buono stato di conservazione generale. Así, resulta significativo que Mendo dejara Montesa al margen de la edición latina de 1657 pero sí la incluyera en la que presentamos, la castellana de 1681. Trata en la obra, entre muchos otros temas, los votos santiaguistas, que para los laicos eran castidad, pobreza y obediencia. Hasta aquí, nada nuevo, pero la particularidad viene por el hecho de que la castidad se entiende como conyugal y que obliga, por lo tanto, a abstenerse de los hábitos conyugales ilícitos, entendiendo como tales sólo los tiempos en que tales actos pueden consumarse.
