Mesens dalla fine degli anni Trenta visse in permanenza a Londra, trascorrendo lunghi soggiorni a Bruxelles, a Milano e a Venezia. Partecipò a numerosissime manifestazioni del Movimento Surreakista Internazionale; nel 1963 una restrospettiva della sua opera (Collages) si tenne a Knokke in Belgio, un'altra a Milano nel 1965.
