The slipcase is a plain tan colour and somewhat worn with stains on both the front and back. The book cover is quarter-bound with an attractive willow pattern in dark green on pale green paper, and a blue-grey cloth-covered spine with gilt lettering and willow pattern. The cover is undamaged and the binding is square and firm. Plain yellow endpapers, engraving of Thoreau as frontispiece and maybe a dozen or fifteen engravings throughout the text. Pages are clean and unmarked, top edges are bright yellow, the book does not appear to have ever been read.

Housed and protected in such good condition by original yellow slipcase with closed split to unseen shelf edge and small nick, great shelf presence with gilt text and willow leaves.
