Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal coloured linocut depicting a woman with long, flowing red hair walking through a forest at twilight beneath a sinking sun and a purple, faintly star-flecked sky. 31.5 x 18.5cm. Signed within the block to the lower left. Mounted, unframed. There is a very minor indentation to the upper-right margin, otherwise condition is very good indeed, the linocut remaining clean and fresh, the colours vivid. A beautifully composed and coloured Art Nouveau linocut by the painter, etcher, and lithographer Philip Leslie Moffat Ward RE SGA (1888-1978), demonstrating his mastery of atmosphere, light and shade. Born in Worcester, Ward studied at the Drummond Road Art School in Bournemouth under Lister Lobley, James Sparks, and Henry Maudsley, later teaching there himself. He was also a student at the Royal Academy School, winning a gold medal in the national competition of the School of Art 1909-1910. His first solo exhibition was in Bournemouth in 1930, and he also exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy (from 1915), the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers, The Society of Graphic Art, The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, and The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. He was elected Associate of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers in 1916 and a full member in 1936. His work is now held in numerous public collections, including The Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, and the Russell Coates Art Gallery in Bournemouth, amongst others. Ward's lincouts were often issued in very small editions of around 30. The present linocut is unnumbered, and we have been unable to trace any other examples. An uncommon and particularly striking image by the artist.
