Veertig jaar trok het verzamelaarsechtpaar Maudy Smith en Jaap Heij de wereld rond op zoek naar zilveren sieraden. Ze legden een verzameling aan van bijna zeshonderd etnische sieraden uit een gebied dat zich uitstrekt van Marokko tot China. De collectie omvat hoofdsieraden, hals- en borstkettingen, armbanden, ringen, riemen, enkelbanden en teenringen, maar er zijn ook gebruiksvoorwerpen bij als chatelaines, oorlepeltjes en een reisset. Zilver leeft, vindt het echtpaar, precies dat maakt het edelmetaal zo bijzonder. Goud blijft altijd blinken, maar een zilveren sieraad dat ongebruikt blijft, wordt dof. Wordt het gedragen, dan gaat het glanzen en slijt het hier en daar af. Zo vertelt elk zilverwerk een eigen intiem levensverhaal. De kracht van zilver toont tweehonderd sieraden uit de collectie Smith- Hutschenruyter. Dit boek belicht niet alleen de pracht en de kunde, maar ook de mensen achter de sieraden. Ontwerpers vertellen over de stukken die ze maken; smeden, handelaren en de collectioneurs zelf nemen het woord. Vrouwen hebben het over hun band met hun sieraden.
