Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag abgenutzt, insgesamt vergilbt, sonst gutes Exemplar / Dust jacket worn, yellowed overall, otherwise a good copy. - In the present volume Dr. Fairbanks points out, first, that it is the art of Greece and Rome rather than that of any other age or people which makes an immediate appeal to the modern mind. An analysis of what is meant by the classical tradition shows that it is marked by a clear cut, intellectual point of view which determines its different forms of expression. The author traces the Greek spirit in its restless odyssey across the centuries to the present time. Finally, the attempt is made to determine what is meant by the Greek spirit and what are some of the ways in which it is manifested in Greek art, in such a way that its presence may be detected in the later art of Europe even to the present day. Schutzumschlag etwas abgenutzt, insgesamt vergilbt, sonst guter Zustand / Dust jacket somewhat worn, overall yellowed, otherwise in good condition. - A Syrian by birth, Lucian was a self- made Greek who came to write the best Greek prose known since the days of Plato and Demosthenes, both of whom he claimed as his spiritual godfathers. Lucian wrote rhetorical, critical and biographical works, romances, dialogues and poems. Those who reckon Lucian among the philosophers may not immediately recognize him in this portrait as one of whom all the world was undisguisedly a stage and all men and gods a joint-stock company of players on it. Professor Allinson values Lucian more as a satirist and writer of comedy, than as a philosopher. Lucian was a sincere crusader against shams, inherited or new: the pagan gods, the complex of contemporary philosophies, pretenders in history, hypocritical legacy-hunters, vulgar collectors of books and above all the superstitions, major and minor, of his time. Lucians enduring contribution Allinson demonstrates was in the Aristophanic tradition; in this realm the author ranks him among the truly great satirists who not only add to the gaiety of nations, but also clear the moral atmosphere. - Altersbedingt vergilbt, Einband leicht bestoßen, sonst sehr gutes Exemplar / Yellowed due to age, binding slightly scuffed, otherwise very good copy. - EDITORS PREFACE CICEROS career, influence and meaning are most important in determining Our Debt to Greece and Rome, which the volumes of this series are aiming to make clear. Cicero, the great mediator, has enshrined the significance of ancient Rome in the hearts of many, and our debt to him is one of the spirit, of enlightenment and charity, of love of truth and liberty. So great is that debt that another volume in the Library is reserved for Cicero, the philosopher. Professor Rolfe has written a defense of Cicero, such as will commend itself to twentieth century thought. That Ciceros star has, at times, suffered an eclipse is not astonishing. Ignorance may blot out even a gospel of light. But the appraisal of the future is apt to be more cordial than it has sometimes been in the past. The story of the influence of Cicero is one to command admiration and wonder. Such movements as Christianity, the Renaissance and the French Revolution drew direct inspiration from this Roman of long ago. The charm of. his language and the reasonableness of' his thought have contributed to Ciceros enduring influence. It was Ciceros persuasive eloquence that made the world pay heed to his message. Centuries after his death, Cicero has remained a living presence, real to members of the English Parliament, real to Thomas Jefferson, and for us he remains an immortal, who, above all, demonstrates the unity of civilization and the common aspirations of the race. It is reserved for only a few to belong to yesterday, to-day and tomorrow and to lead mankind by wisdom that possesses universal validity. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Aggiungi al carrelloSigned limited edition, number 110 of 200 copies signed by Henry Moore. Loosely inserted as issued is a signed lithograph of "Seated Mother and Child" (1973), which is printed on Barcham Green, numbered 35/100 and housed in its original card chemise. This deluxe edition of the catalogue raisonné of the artist's work in the print medium from 1931 to 1972 is illustrated with gorgeous reproductions which truly capture the texture and colour of the prints. Moore's earliest prints, made when he was a student, were woodcuts, but he quickly moved on to etching and lithograph. At the time this book went to press he was experimenting with aquatints in colour and soft ground etching. The preface, by Alistair Grant, is in English, French and German. Large quarto. Colour frontispiece and illustrations throughout in colour and black and white. Original brown cloth, titles to spine in white. With the pictorial dust jacket and original brown cloth splipcase. Lithograph size: 175 x 250 mm (sheet size: 235 x 304 mm). Slipcase mildly rubbed at extremities and with a couple of small faint marks. An exceptionally bright and fresh copy in fine condition.
