This copy is almost 100 years old, has been well taken care of and is in fine condition. Its construction is unlike most of the poorly made book club e…ditions. The buckram covered boards, high quality paper and matching top stain add up to a handsome edition possibly as desirable and rare as the first edition. The text block is solid, clean and square. Pictorial endpapers are clear of markings with small previous owner's bookplate under front flap. Spine tight, boards rigid and tips pointed. Slight push to spine ends. There is no book club deboss on the rear cover. The jacket is in very good minus condition and has some closed tearing along backstrip seams and chipping/loss at spine ends and some edges. It looks sleek in a shiny new plastic cover. Shipping box is suitable for wrapping with a non-price listed purchase order inside along with biodegradable packing.

Cicero, the great mediator, has enshrined the significance of ancient Rome in the hearts of many, and our debt to him is one of the spirit, of enlightenment and charity, of love of truth and liberty. So great is that debt that another volume in the Library is reserved for Cicero, the philosopher. Professor Rolfe has written a defense of Cicero, such as will commend itself to twentieth century thought. That Ciceros star has, at times, suffered an eclipse is not astonishing. Ignorance may blot out even a gospel of light. But the appraisal of the future is apt to be more cordial than it has sometimes been in the past. The story of the influence of Cicero is one to command admiration and wonder. Such movements as Christianity, the Renaissance and the French Revolution drew direct inspiration from this Roman of long ago. The charm of. his language and the reasonableness of' his thought have contributed to Ciceros enduring influence. It was Ciceros persuasive eloquence that made the world pay heed to his message. Centuries after his death, Cicero has remained a living presence, real to members of the English Parliament, real to Thomas Jefferson, and for us he remains an immortal, who, above all, demonstrates the unity of civilization and the common aspirations of the race. Signed limited edition, number 110 of 200 copies signed by Henry Moore. Loosely inserted as issued is a signed lithograph of "Seated Mother and Child" (1973), which is printed on Barcham Green, numbered 35/100 and housed in its original card chemise. This deluxe edition of the catalogue raisonné of the artist's work in the print… medium from 1931 to 1972 is illustrated with gorgeous reproductions which truly capture the texture and colour of the prints. Moore's earliest prints, made when he was a student, were woodcuts, but he quickly moved on to etching and lithograph. At the time this book went to press he was experimenting with aquatints in colour and soft ground etching. The preface, by Alistair Grant, is in English, French and German. Large quarto. Colour frontispiece and illustrations throughout in colour and black and white. Original brown cloth, titles to spine in white. With the pictorial dust jacket and original brown cloth splipcase. Lithograph size: 175 x 250 mm (sheet size: 235 x 304 mm). Slipcase mildly rubbed at extremities and with a couple of small faint marks. An exceptionally bright and fresh copy in fine condition.
