Interfunktionen, eine Kunstzeitschrift, die zwischen 1968 und 1975 in Köln zwölf Ausgaben veröffentlichte, wurde 1968 als Protestform von Künstlern gegründet, die keine Affinität zu den kritischen Linien hatten, die in jenem Jahr auf der Documenta neu gezogen wurden. Die Zeitarbeit war von großer Bedeutung als Vehikel zur Verbreitung pro-europäischer Ideen und als Union zwischen Künstlern in Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten, unabhängig von den damals vorherrschenden Bewegungen. Es enthielt sowohl theoretische als auch praktische Beiträge, mit dem Eingreifen von Schöpfern, die ihre künstlerischen Strategien definierten und illustrierten. Direkt verbunden mit den bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie, wie Joseph Beuys, Jörg Immendorf und Sigmar Polke, war sie auch mit den lebhaftesten und reflexivsten Künstlern der Zeit vertreten, von Vito Acconci und Marcel Broodthaers bis hin zu Bruce Nauman und Dieter Roth.
