Prima edizione
Rare original presumed first edition of Lankester's, "A Plain and Easy Account of the British Ferns: Together with Their Classification, Arrangement of Genera, Structure, and Functions and a Glosssary of Technical and Other Terms." The book is overall in very good condition with just some minor signs of wear and age. It is undated but circa about 1860. The book is illustrated with 9 lovely hand-colored plates as called for. The covers only have some light wear. The interior is lightly toned from age with some occasional light foxing and grubbiness. There is an 1863 name inscription to the half title, some tiny inked x's and brackets in fountain pen to the index pages, and a tiny inked "x" to one of the plates. The backside of the rear fep has some small numbers written in blue ink near the top corner. Along with that there may be the very occasional page with some kind of other minor imperfection such as a tiny chip or tear, creased page corner, minor stain or marking, etc. Generally though, it's a very nice copy. The book measures approximately 6 3/4 inches by 4 inches and is 180 pages long. Please look at all of the photos to further note the condition.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fair. Sowerby, J; Sowerby, J de C; Salter, J W (illustratore). 3rd Edition. Volume Eight of the Third Edition of Sowerby's English Botany. 296pp, plus 206 hand-coloured copper-engraved lithographs (plates mclxxviii to mccclxxxiv). 4to. . Half-bound in leather over silk moire with gilt rules and lettering (boards strong and robust but worn along edges and spine joints, rubbed through on corners). The first 16 leaves are detached, as are pages 285-288, and binding fragile. Some minor indentations on page edges, else internally clean and bright. The botanical prints in particular remain fresh and bright. A good candidate for some restoration. English Botany was a major publication of British plants comprising a 36 volume set, issued in 267 monthly parts over 23 years from 1790 to 1814. The work was conceived, illustrated, edited and published by the botanical illustrator and natural historian, James Sowerby. The complete First Edition (1790-1814) comprises 2,592 hand-coloured, finely detailed, copper-plate engravings and is now rare. The third edition, with some additional plates, saw the introduction of a 'popular section' but the plates were taken from the same copper plates used for the first edition which, had by this time, deteriorated. . Reasonable offers welcome.
