Die Herausgeber des Handbuchs verstehen unter Kontaktlinguistik eine von Linguisten aller Fachrichtungen gegenüber dem Phänomen des sozialen Kontakts zweier oder mehrerer natürlicher Einzelsprachen eingenommene Forschungshaltung und die daraus sich ergebenden theoretischen und praktischen Resutate. Sie sind sich dabei aber der Tatsache voll bewußt, daß kontaktlinguistisches Forschen keine Neuerung des 20. Jahrhunderts ist, sondern vielmehr schon immer integrativer Bestandteil von Linguistik und Philologie seit deren Existenz als Einzelwissenschaft war. Aus systematischen, arbeitspraktischen, aber auch wissenschafts-historischen Gründen wird jedoch im Rahmen der Konzeption dieses Handbuchs davon ausgegangen, daß von Kontaktlinguistik im engeren Sinne erst in der Nachfolge von Uriel Weinreichs Buch 'Languages in Contact' (1953) gesprochen werden kann. Hinsichtlich der Eigenständigkeit der Kontaktlinguistik wird auf zwei heute sehr wesentliche Faktoren hingewiesen: 1) auf den sachlich relevanten Umstand der in neuerer Zeit immens gesteigerten Mobilität vieler Völker, Kulturen und Kulturgüter (und damit auch von deren Sprachen) und 2) auf die wissenschaftliche Notwendigkeit der integrativen Zusammenfügung ansonsten getrennt operierender Einzelwissenschaften zu einer möglichst umfassenden wissenschaftlichen Analyse mehrsprachiger Phänomene. Das zweibändige Handbuch richtet sich an alle - Wissenschaftler wie interessierte Laien - , die mit Problemen des synchronen Sprachkontakts zu tun haben. In beiden Halbbänden werden zur besseren Vermittlung der Problematik neben dem wissenschaftlichen Text in größerem Umfang auch Graphiken, Tabellen und Karten verwendet. Dieses Handbuch ist der erste Versuch, weltweit stets wichtiger werdende Themen wie Mehrsprachigkeit, Sprachkontakt und Sprachkonflikt in übersichtlichen und die jüngsten Forschungsergebnisse einschließenden Analysen zu erarbeiten und der Fachwelt vorzulegen. 1264 pp. Deutsch.
