The book presents a cross-cultural study of headdresses drawn for ethnic groups in Black Africa, North Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands and the Americas. In the introduction the authors make a detailed examination of such features as the place of headdresses in the total system of body modifications, their special significance, their multiple functions and meanings, the modes of ownership, and the contexts in which these objects occur. In the second part of the book, headdresses of different formal and functional types are illustrated in 260 color and black and white plates, accompanied by drawings and contextural photographs. All objects are explained in elaborate descriptions providing identifications of regions, ethnic groups and forms and interpretations of functions, meanings and contexts. An extensive bibliography is appended to the book.
