Title in red & black ink. Pages 63-96. Deckled pap…er edges, lovely woodcuts (full page) and other illustrations throughout by Harold Nelson. Just lovely. Overall in GOOD condition. Photos available upon request. Nelson was born in Dorchester on 22 May 1871, a town where Nelsons had lived since the 18th century. He trained at the Lambeth School of Art and at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, studying under Luke Taylor, RE, at the latter. Luke Taylor, being a man of exceptionally high ideals, as well as an excellent etcher, enlisted at the first opportunity during the First World War and after a short period of service was sadly killed. Nelson was strongly influenced by Albrecht Durer and William Morris and worked as a prolific black and white artist specialising in medieval illustrations in a Pre-Raphaelite, Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau style often with elaborate ornamental borders. He was a highly skilled draughtsman and until recently was only appreciated as one of the minor figures amongst the more well-known names associated with the 'black and white' artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nelson's work was frequently published in a number of illustrated books and in The Studio, The Graphic (1915), The Sphere, The Queen, Ladies Field, London Illustrated Weekly, Magazine of Art (designed a calendar for 1901), Royal Academy Pictures (illustrated the cover, 1908), Old Colleges of Oxford, Aymer Vallance (illustrated the frontispiece, 1912), The Booklovers Magazine, The Bookplate, Cassells Magazine and in numerous other magazines and periodicals. In 1920 he wrote an article for the London Illustrated Weekly on the origin and aims of the Society of Graphic Art. He is best known for his sophisticated bookplates and heraldic designs, his first one appearing in 1897, inspired by Durer. Designing for individuals and institutions he took pleasure in matching each plate to the name or character of the owner. Thus, on Joan Phillip's bookplate we see Joan of Arc, on Gerald Knight's a knight in armour and on his work for St Andrew's, his local church in Carshalton, a Celtic design incorporating the Scottish saint. Mr. Nelson's bookplates "are autobiographical of their owners, and equally autobiographical of himself; they are instinct with the courtliness of an English Gentle-man." (Bulloch). -Bookplates by Harold Nelson, 1929. The Studio in 1900, referred to his bookplates as; "bright and spirited, while in beauty of drawing it would be hard to find their equals among modern book-plates." Although Nelson trained in the traditions of William Morris, as a commercial artist, he adapted his style to each new movement as it came along. In the 1920's and 1930's he worked in an Art Deco style, his most notable designs being the Wembley Lion with a 'setting sun'motif on the British Empire postage stamps of 1924 and 1925. However, his impressive drawing of St George and the Dragon for the £1 stamp for the Postal Union Congress, 1929, harks back to his earlier style. Nelson also submitted a stamp design for the 1935 Silver Jubilee of King George V, but it was rejected. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Hardcover.
