First and only edition of a lecture on the value of the art of drawing and painting, given by Gerard van Nijmegen (1735-1808) at the Rotterdam art Society "Hier door tot hooger" on April 5th 1800. The lecture was held at the start of the annual award ceremony of the society, and emphasises how art encourages human ingenuity and virtue. The speaker, Van Nijmegen, was a painter and engraver, and the director of this Society. He especially excelled in landscapes. His lecture was likely published in limited numbers, as we have not been able to trace any other copies in sales records or institutions.The wrappers have been rubbed, with loss of material on the spine. Aus einer Bezeichnung von älterer Hand auf dem Sammlungsuntersatz geht hervor, daß Nijmegen nach einer Vorlage von Ph. Wouwerman gearbeitet hat. Die Frage ob dies wirklich zutrifft, konnten wir nicht klären. Gerard van Nijmegen, der aus einer Künstlerfamilie stammte, war als Maler, Zeichner und Kupferstecher tätig. Bekannt war er auch als Kunstsammler - er besaß eine umfassende Kunstsammlung, vor allem an Zeichnungen und Radierungen. Da er anscheinend finanziell gut ausgestattet war, unternahm er Reisen durch Deutschland und die Niederlande, wo er auch Künstlerkollegen besuchte und Sammlungen besichtigte. …
