Condizione: Fair. Henry Alken, D. Maclise (illustratore). First edition. 301p + 13 plates by Henry Alken and a frontispiece portrait by Daniel Maclise. Covers rubbed and spotted. Frontispiece loosening. Lacks some of the tissue guardsheets. The margins of the opening spread and the plates are discolored and sometimes heavily foxed. I don't know the cause of the discoloring. The text pages are clean. Three long articles on hunting, racing, and driving, reprinted from the Quarterly Review. Lots of colorful detail. On the elegance of London coachmen processing through Hyde Park he writes, "it is hard to determine which shine brightest, the lace on their clothes, their own round faces, or their flaxen wigs,--the pipe-clayed reins--pipe-clayed lest they should soil the clean white gloves,--the gigantic young fellows, in huge cocked hats, bedaubed with lace, in laced silk stockings, new kid gloves, and with gold-headed canes, . . . not forgetting the spotted coach-dog, which has just been washed for the occasion." However, he also notes that "like all other trades, coach-making is on the wane" and prices are dropping. An edition that often shows wear. Reading copy, sold as is, priced accordingly. An attractive facsimile printing of the second enlarged edition of the amusing biography, including a colour title lead, and notes on Alken and Nimrod. A charming facsimile of the Second revised and enlarged edition of the Memoirs of the Life of the Late John Mytton, the influential biography on the Regency rake, eccentric and politician, written by sport journalist and author Charles James Apperley under the pseudonym Nimrod. Believed to have been printed in 1914, originally published in 1837. In the publisher's original green cloth, with a colour title leaf, frontispiece, and nineteen other colour plates by British painters Henry Thomas Alken and T.J. Rawlins. This particular facsimile contains an insightful introduction on Alken's illustrations, written by British art collector and journalist Joseph Grego, and an introductory notice on Nimrod written by H.C. A friend of his subject, Nimrod's biography on Mytton is perhaps more famous than the larger-than-life figure himself, and such is due to his brilliant recounting of Mytton's various exploits, including bribing voters into parliament, attempting to jump over a tollgate with horse and carriage, and many other wild stories In the publisher's original green cloth. Externally, mostly smart, with small marks to front board extremities and to the rear board, and slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. End papers are bright and clean with minor signs of browning. Internally, firmly bound, with very minor wear to hinge between plate and p.51. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.

"Apperley's task was to write the life of a man who, while he was one of the most heroic sportsmen that ever lived, was also drunken, diseased and insane, and he performed the task with admirable judgment. [Cambridge History of English and American Literature, vol. XIV]. Three of the plates in this first edition (2, 8 and 9) did not appear in the second edition and valued highter than the second edition which had 18 plates. Owner inscription front cover pastedown.
