GORDON CROTCH [Number 27 of 120], Giuseppe (Pino) Orioli; Mark Holloway (introduction and notes), hardcover, limited edition, 1974. BOOK CONDITION: near fine. The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dog-ears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. Cloth spine with marbled paper-covered board and paper spine label. 9 ¾ x 6 ¼, 19 pages, 10 ounces XX [Wikipedia] Giuseppe "Pino" Orioli (1884-1942) was a Florentine bookseller best known for privately publishing the unexpurgated first edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover and for his long association with Norman Douglas. XX [Co-Pilot AI] Martha Gordon Crotch (1879-1967) was an English-born expatriate who became known as the proprietor of The Peasant Shop in Vence, France. She lived a long life that intersected with many notable figures in early 20th century intellectual and artistic circles. Her personal diaries (1935-1956) and papers reveal close friendships with prominent radicals and writers, including Alexander Berkman, Emma Goldman, Emmy Eckstein, Frieda Lawrence, and Norman Douglas. She also corresponded with Giuseppe (Pino) Orioli, the Florentine bookseller and publisher known for his association with Norman Douglas. A typescript of her autobiography, along with photographs and personal papers, survives in the Mark Holloway papers at Yale?s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Holloway had been preparing an unpublished biography of her. Crotch?s life offers a window into the expatriate networks of writers, anarchists, and free thinkers in Europe between the wars. Her friendships connected her to the radical political movements of the early 20th century and to literary figures who shaped modernist culture. Orioli's relationship with Norman Douglas began in Florence after Douglas settled there in 1921. Orioli undertook the private publication of many of Douglas's subsequent writings. Some of those and a number of previously unpublished works by other English authors, such as Richard Aldington, D. H. Lawrence, and W. Somerset Maugham, were published in Orioli's Lungarno book series. Orioli and Douglas traveled extensively together and were so close that they were known to their friends by the name Pinorman, a portmanteau word combining Orioli's nickname Pino with Douglas's given name of "Norman. There is no evidence that they were lovers, but they behaved like a married couple. The primary inspiration for their travels was to pursue sexual encounters with boys and the older male youth whom Orioli preferred. Richard Aldington, who knew Orioli, wrote that Orioli had an instinctive and unconquerable physical aversion from women.
