He also expressed a keen interest in archaeology. "In 1892, in collaboration with the naturalist and prehistorian François Doumergue, he discovered several Palaeolithic and Neolithic sites located in the Orania region, notably the caves at Cuartel and Kouchet El Djir and the quarries of Eckmühl, known as the Alain shelter. Human traces estimated at 100,000 years were found in these caves . Numerous archaeological artefacts were collected. Some are deposited in the Ahmed Zabana Museum." (Wikipedia).
