El protagonista esconde bajo su supuesta devoción religiosa en realidad una vida disoluta y cínica, con el único deseo de heredar la fortuna de su benefactora. A medida que Queirós describe las peripecias y el carácter de Teodorico, destripa con crítica mordaz y no poca burla la hipocresía de la sociedad portuguesa de su tiempo. Las críticas hacia el conservadurismo, el clericalismo y la intolerancia hicieron de La reliquia una obra desafiante y perturbadora en su época, aunque ha pasado a la historia de la literatura como una de las más brillantes sátiras de todos los tiempos./ R30-5.

Graveur imprimeur à Paris, Stern Graveur, atelier spécialisé dans la gravure de papier à lettre, invitations, faire-part, monogrammes, chevalières armoriées, cartes de voeux.La Maison Stern et Aumoitte a été fondée en 1836 par Monsieur Aumoitte qui s'associe à un jeune graveur, Moïse Stern. Cette association dure jusqu'à la fin des années 1850 puis Moïse Stern reprend la Maison. L'ex-libris de la Maison Stern devient un grand « S » dans lequel se loge un lion dressé, la patte antérieure reposant sur le monogramme « MS » entrelacé. The Maison Stern et Aumoitte was founded in 1836 by Mr. Aumoitte, who partnered with a young engraver, Moïse Stern. T.his partnership lasted until the late 1850s, when Moïse Stern took over the company. The Maison Stern bookplate became a large "S" containing a rearing lion, its foreleg resting on the intertwined monogram "MS." A hand brandishing an engraver's tool and two pieces of armor, a glove, and a helmet, complete the composition. In 1867 and 1889, the Maison Stern was awarded the Gold Medal at these two World's Fairs. Moïse Stern would later occasionally serve as a member of the jury that awarded this medal. In the 1890s, Mr. Stern brought his son René into the business, which took the name Stern et fils. René Stern took over the shop in 1904. Among its prestigious clients, Maison Stern has had the honor of counting the Élysée Palace for its menus and invitations, embassies, the nobility, and major French and foreign companies. Thirty-six works by Cooke are listed between 1790 and 1843. The present item, along with its companion piece 'Carte de la basse Egypte: dressée d'après les observations astronomiques de C. Nouet, et les reconnaissances des ingénieurs et officiers employés à l'Armée d'Orient', appeared in 'Planches du Voyage dans la Basse et la haute Egypte, par Vivant Denon', published in Paris by P. Didot in 1802. Both have the engraved signature 'John Cooke, sc, 50 Howland St.' The dimensions of the map are approximately 31.5 x 23.5 cm. The surrounding margins have been closely trimmed, leaving a little space at the foot with the caption 'PLAN DU KAIRE ET DES ENVIRONS', and at bottom right 'John Cooke, sc. 50 Howland St'. Somewhat worn and discoloured, with worn central vertical crease. A fine example of the cartographer's art, with plan at top right of the 'CHATEAU DU KAIRE', with numbered key from A to T; and key to 'GHIZE', from A to H, at bottom right.
