Based on an exhibition at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Segmented Realities compiles a group of five paintings and ten sculptural paintings by Cuban-American painter José Parlá (born 1973). Each of the works suggest fragments salvaged from urban sites that have experienced social upheaval and transformation; like his segments of walls in Havana, New York, London or the Berlin Wall, Parlá's sculptures bear witness to the waves of history inscribed on their surfaces, told in the poetic language of the city--surfaces bearing layers of marks on which ensuing generations might imagine their own manifestos and declarations of selfhood. With an essay by curator Michael Rooks, this hardcover is a gorgeous documentation of Parlá's latest project. Parlá is also known for recently completing a commissioned 90-foot mural for the lobby of One World Trade Center in New York City, a mural at the Barclays Center and also at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Libro.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Limited-edition book celebrating Parla's first solo exhibition of works on canvas, watercolors and ceramics. His layers of paint are representative of the layers of life, documenting the passages of days. Small bump to edge both front and back cover, otherwise, no sign of use. Laid-in is letter from gallery owner introducing book.
Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. 'Polarities' materialized in the wake of the pandemic when the artist felt its impacts acutely; after months spent in a hospital with COVID19, Parla's doctors weren't sure if he'd ever paint again. But, an artist to his core, he proved them wrong, and the works that came about carry a heightened sense of spirituality and empathy. More than ever, Parla sees within his practice the threads that unite us and how our actions (and passivity) become our legacy. A prominent characteristic of his work, the paintings in Polarities share a strong sense of centrum: a heart or prime mover from which bold brushstrokes and elegant lines of script emanate. These marks indicate the beginning of time, the moment from which every passing day and its events have radiated, crashed, and splintered. They are maps and topographies, micro and macro ecosystems.
