Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. When Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli became Pope Pius XII in 1939, the Nazis had invaded Austria and Czechoslovakia and were poised to strike Poland. Jews and other minorities were already being sent to concentration camps, and the world was on the verge of another horrific war. The prevailing his…torical interpretation of the era was that Pius XII had a stated anti - Nazi and anti - Fascist policy; he tried to bring an end to the persecution and gave aid and comfort to those who were persecuted. Revisionist views, however, portray Pius XII as a silent, passive individual who ignored the treatment of Jews, Christians and other minorities - a man who could have stopped the holocaust and didn't. Through a series of articles and essays, the editor and eight contributors critique the works of revisionists who allege that Pius XII was sympathetic to the Nazis or unresistant to their atrocities. The essays discuss the roots of these views in the relentless Nazi and communist propaganda of the era, and the debate's revival after a 1960s stage play portrayed the pope as a leader afraid to speak out. By bringing intellectual rigor and responsibility to the issue, this work makes a solid contribution to the history of the papacy and to the biography of Pius XII. A series of articles and essays that critique the works of revisionists who allege that Pius XII was sympathetic to the Nazis or unresistant to their atrocities. This book discusses the roots of these views in the relentless Nazi and communist propaganda of the era, and also contributes to the history of the papacy, and the biography of Pius XII. Paperback. Condizione: New. On October 16, 1943, the Jews of Rome were targeted for arrest and deportation. The Nazis, the Vatican, and the Jews of Rome examines why-and more importantly how-it could have been avoided, featuring new evidence and insight into the Vatican's involvement. At the time, Rome was within reach of the Al…lies, but the overwhelming force of the Wehrmacht, Gestapo, and SS in Rome precluded direct confrontation. Moral condemnations would not have worked, nor would direct confrontation by the Italians, Jewish leadership, or even the Vatican. Gallo underscores the necessity of determining what courses of actions most likely would have spared Italian Jews from the gas chambers. Examining the historical context and avoiding normative or counterfactual assertions, this book draws upon archival sources ranging from diaries to intelligence intercepts in English, Italian, and German. With antisemitism on the rise today and the last remaining witnesses passing away, it is essential to understand what happened in 1943. The Nazis, the Vatican, and the Jews of Rome grapples with this particular, awful episode within the larger, horrifying story of the Holocaust. Despite the inadequacy of memory, we must continue to attempt to make sense of the inexplicable.

"The American Paradox: Politics and Justice is a history of the evolving administration of justice in America. Recounting political trials from the beginning of the Republic to the present tiime, Patrick J. Gallo demonstrates how political motives and dissenting views enter into the courtroom and supplant the rule of law. The author traces political trials through various eras, from the beginning of the Republic, to the Industrial Revolution and rise of the labor movement, through World War I, the rise of communism and the McCarthy period, to the antiwar protests during the Vietnam War. Central to the book is the American Orthodox Political Ideology, the commonly held belief that our justice system is impartial. However, Gallo demonstrates how the infusion of politics into political trials serves to pervert justice and contradict the American Orthodox Political Ideology. A chilling pattern emerges in trial after trial in which politics influences the final verdict and clouds the administration of justice, the innocent are punished, and the American judicial system as a whole is diminished. The history of political trials from the time of the Sons of Liberty to the trial of Angela Davis presents an American paradox of justice where evidence is disregarded. The resulting verdics undermine the rule of law. The accounts of trials awaken the reader to the very real threat that politically-based trials pose to our concepts of liberty and justice for all. This book shakes the complacency of those who trust solely in the foundations of our justice system. It should alert citizens, who may be called to participate in future juries, that challenges exist to our cherished freedoms. We must be vigilant in defending our rights, because protecting those liberties in future courtrooms is key to preserving liberty." - from the rear outer cover. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Patrick J. Gallo received his Ph.D in political science from New York University, where he was adjunct professor of political science. He has lectured widely in the United States and has taught at American University, SUNY-Purchase, and Queens College. Dr. Gallo has authored numerous articles an books, including Old Bread, New Wine: A Portrait of the Itaalian-Americans; Ethnic Alienation: The Italian Americans; Swords and Plowshares: THe U.S. and Disarmament; India's Image of the International System, The Urban Experience of Italian Americans and Patters of American Foreign Policy, et al.
