Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In the Second World War, thousands of Australian boys lied about their age and volunteered for a war the scale of which they could never have imagined. Like many of their fathers in the Great War, they went with their eyes wide shut: under-trained, under-equipped and under-age. Some were as young as thirteen - too young even to shave. Many did not grow old; others came back broken. A handful are still alive to tell their tales. This extraordinary book captures the bold and untold stories of forty Australian children who fought in the deadliest war in history. Follow these boys through Libya and Palestine, Greece and Crete to the jungles of Malaya, Papua New Guinea and Borneo, fighting for their lives, their country, their mates. Many of the photographs have never been seen. Haunting images of youths in training camps and behind the lines stand beside moving portraits of old men who have not forgotten.Sons of War is a deeply personal military history: an homage to youthful bravery, a eulogy for those who fell, a tribute to those still standing. The follow-up to the multi-award-winning, bestselling The Lost Boys, focusing on under-age soldiers from World War II. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. …

Hardback. INDIE AWARD WINNER 2020They were just boys. And they were to face the horrors of a war more diabolical than any of them could have imagined. This is their story. Hundreds of Australian and New Zealander boys enlisted in the First World War, some as young as 13. No one knows how many went to war, but at least 150 Australians did not come back. Their names are on the Roll of Honour, the record of war dead at the War Memorial in Canberra. Most died on the Western Front, in France and Belgium. They took part in every major battle in which the ANZACs fought - from Fromelles in July 1916, to the liberation of Villers-Bretonneux in 1918. Many died in the first wave at Gallipoli or at Lone Pine in August 1915. Why did they go and who allowed this to happen? We can only understand how if we look through their eyes and walk in their shoes. In The Lost Boys, their stories will be told for the first time. 2019, First edition, first printing. A near fine copy in a fine d/w. 3.4 Centimeters X 22.8 Centimeters X 19.2 Centimeters.…

Soft Covers. Condizione: VG+. No Jacket. 1st. Sub-titled "The Remarkable Story of George Roberts" this book as well as recording the career of GR is also a potted history of Australia's flag carrier airline, Qantas. By the mid-1930s the airline was well established within Australia and looking to spreading its wings internationally. By then GR was also well versed in aviation engineering and in 1936 he gained a coveted position in the Qantas engineering department, where his brother was already emplpyed, against the policy to employ more that one person from the same family. He retired from the company in late 1970, havinge served with it from bi-planes to jet air liners, through the building of the airline to an international carrier, the era of the flying boat, through its rebuilding post-World War Two and the difficulties that conflict created, as well as the epic flights it instigated. GR was 90 when this book was published and much new light is shed on the airline's early days through his hands-on recollections, many cast with dinkum Aussie wit. If many of his anecdotes are new to Australian aviation history, so is much of the large collection of photographs and other material illustrating his book. A valuable addition to historic aviation literature. First edition from 2000 by Watermark Press, 196 pages including index, b/w photos throughout, plus few diagrams and document reproductions, small chapter head drawings are repeated in miniature top corner right hand pages. Stiff pictorial/art card covers are VG+, small paper square with gift inscription tipped in on half title, text block otherwise NF. Photos (illustratore).…
