First edition. xv, 150pp. Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein (1889-1951) was a famous Austrian-British philosopher who worked primarily in logic, the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of language. Paul Engelmann was a friend and disciple of Wittgenstein, and in this book he first gives a picture of the personality of the young Wittgenstein. He then deals with the Tractatus, and there is also some new light cast on his reaction to Russell's Preface and his later association with Moritz Schlick. The last chapters give some account of Wittgenstein's family. There are about 50 letters of Wittgenstein (the German text is also printed); and a brief account of Engelmann by a friend. The book is bound in the original brick-red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with a name and date neatly written on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the spine is faded. The spine edges are worn with a thin split down part of the front spine edge. The corners are rubbed and the spine ends are bumped and nicked with small pieces missing. There is a tear of about 3/4" on the top front spine corner that has been repaired on the reverse with tape.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good Plus. Ludwig Wittgenstein (illustratore). First Edition. 1994. 240pp. Colour and B&W illustrations. Some foxing to inside of unclipped dust jacket. Both the book and jacket are otherwise in excellent condition with no inscriptions, and all contents are tight and clean. PLEASE NOTE: Heavy book so extra will be needed for shipping to non-UK customers. "The compelling power of Ludwig Wittgenstein's genius, which changed the course of Western philosophy, emerged inmistakably in everything he did. For him, nothing was trivial or of secondary importance. Between 1926 and 1928, in partnership with the architect Paul Engelmann, he designed and built a house?the Kundmanngasse?in Vienna for his sister, Margaret Stonborough. Although Engelmann was an experienced architect and a former pupil of Adolf Loos, Wittgenstein dominated the collaboration and is credited with the design, which emerged as a uniquely unified, elegant, and austere example of early architectural Modernism. The Kundmanngasse has often been regarded as the concrete embodiment of Wittgenstein's ideas. It is certainly the only dwelling ever designed and built by a great philosopher, and an unparalleled instance of the collusion of thought and architecture, as well as of refined, pristine beauty.".
