Hardcover. vii, [1], 149 p.; 19 cm. (What did they teach?) `I have tried to.write in as detached a way as if I had been expounding the theories of Spinoza or Kant, but I can hardly believe that I have succeeded, for Jesus does not allow us to treat him as if he were merely a teacher. He challenges us to say what we think of his and not only what we think of his doctrine. One who shares the conviction of the authors of the Gospels that Jesus is the Son of God cannot write of him without betraying his belief.' (p. v f.) Good, dull and sl. edgeworn orig. brown cloth. Occas. pencilling.

Hardcover. xvii, 243 p.; 20.5 cm. [Orig. title: Essays in construction, 1933] `Even the most intransigeant upholder of episcopacy would, I suppose, if pressed agree that it is more important to believe in God than in bishops. And it is precisely about belief in God that the real controversy of our time rages. In comparison with that all other religious discussions fall into the background.' (p. xv f.) Good orig. gray cloth. Spine chafed, ends frayed. Occas. penc.

Hardcover. xi, [13]-182 p.; 22 cm. [Orig. London edition 1935] `The history of man is not completed. We are reading a story of which we know only a part, and that very imperfectly. We have no certain information of how much remains to be told. That it should have an enigmatic appearance is not surprising, for we are like a man who should find in a railway carriage a detective story which has been torn in two. He has the first part which states the problem and elaborates the imbroglio, but the second part which would contain the solution and the denouement is missing. But we are not left without material for intelligent conjecture. The historical task and destiny of mankind is not finished, but we can see the outline of the purpose which guides the process. The set-backs and disasters, the catastrophes which intervene and bring high promise to nothing, the more deadly slow decay of once vigorous civilisations, are partly due to that irrational element in human life which we may describe as "chance." But they are also due in part to the failure of persons and societies to respond to their vocation. Providence seems to work in the sphere of history by persuasion and not by compulsion. To the failure of response to vocation must be attributed many of the waverings and vicissitudes of the course of history. But, nevertheless, history has come meaning. It discloses a direction. There is something significant going on--the progressive creation of man.' (p. 151 f.) Good orig. black cloth, head of spine torn. Prior signature ffep.
