Trade cards were antique business cards that first became popular during the late seventeenth century in Paris and Lyon, France and London, England. Trade cards were often given by business owners and proprietors to patrons and customers as a way to promote their businesses. Prior to the use of street addresses, trade cards had maps so clients could locate the associated business. Many of these cards also incorporated elaborate designs, illustrations, and other decorative features. Trade cards became popular in the United States during the nineteenth century in the period after the Civil War. The late nineteenth century also saw the advent of trade card collecting as a hobby. While they are no longer in use, trade cards influenced the formation of trading cards and were the predecessors of modern-day business cards.

Aggiungi al carrelloBritish industrial designer (1895-1961); Chief Instructor, Design, Royal College of Art, 1925-35. The two carbons to Capey from Luckhurst, one page, 12mo; the other three letters, one page, quarto. All very good, though somewhat dusty and lightly creased, and with staple holes to the top left-hand corners. Throwing useful light on the state of post-war art education, the correspondence concerns a request to Luckhurst from 'one-time Fellow of the Society' Hollewell for 'information and advice in regard to my daughter's future training'. 'She is now nearly 17 years of age, is attending the local High School and shows exceptional aptitude in Art. [.] | I suppose that commercial art is the most suitable for lucrative employment, but I should be pleased to have your views on this.' Luckhurst writes to Capey that Hollewell's letter 'asks for advice which I always find it very difficult to give'. Capey suggests sending Hollewell the Royal College of Art prospectus, and informing him that 'Any art student, who is proposing to make a profession of art, should safeguard his or her future by obtaining a degree. The Royal College of Art is the main recognised Institution for this purpose. There are others such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Dundee Colleges, but the degrees offered by them are not of much consequence. | Of the schools suggested by Mr. Hollewell, the Slade is essentially Painting. The Chelsea Art School and the Colleges at Birmingham, Leicester and Nottingham are good of their kind, but I would suggest that for general purposes the London Central School of Arts and Crafts is second best to the Royal College of Art.' Luckhurst incorporates this information in his reply to Hollewell, and thanks Capey in his second letter to him.

Aggiungi al carrelloEngraving, ca. 250 x 220 mm (plate 227 x 184 mm). Pretty advertisement for the Viennese perfume merchant Johann Kreuzenfeld, engraved in German, French, and - uncommonly - in English: "At the fair Sultana No. 1000 in Kärntner Strasse Johann Kreizenfeld sells all Sorts of Wares of Gallantry and Perfumery". The illustration depicts the "fair Sultana" seated on a cushion. - Johann Kreutzenfeld took over the perfume and accessoire shop in Kärntner Straße, still Vienna's most famous shopping street, around 1798 from Joseph Kreutzenfeld, probably his father. As evidenced by the re-engraved portions of the plate (the house number "1000" instead of 961, used until the re-numbering of 1795, and the Christian name), the engraving had been in use before 1795 and was variously changed. The Kreuzenfeld family ran the business in Kärntner Straße (now no. 17), located between Himmelpfortgasse and Weihburggasse, since 1778. The address is today occupied by a flagship store of the German-based "Parfümerie Douglas" perfumery chain, owned by the Kreke family. - Clean and unbrowned. Slight traces of folds. - Cf. Das wienerische Auskunftsschema für Einheimische und Fremde auf das Jahr 1799 (Vienna, Gerold, [1799]), p. 13.
