A tinted lithographic view of Commodore Perry meeting the Imperial Commissioners at Yokohama. Image size is about 9 x 7 inches, in a frame (with glass) measuring 17 x 14 inches. Nice condition. Extracted from the 1856 "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan ." published in 1856. This is a… famous and oft-reprinted image of a significant event in the opening of Japan, and Japanese-American relations. There are a couple of varieties of this lithograph; this is of the variety having at the lower left: "From nature by W.T. Peters" and at the lower right: "Lith. of SARONY & Co. New York.".

Perry's expedition… visited Simoda (Shimoda) in April-May 1854, his squadron can be seen at anchor in the harbour. Heine's composition records interaction between members of the expedition and the local population. "Vandalia" Bluff, was named for one of Perry's squadron, hinting at the gunboat diplomacy employed to gain access to Japanese ports. The sloop Vandalia was present at Commodore Perry's entrance into Tokyo Bay on 13 February 1854, and in 1855 was employed to protect American interests in China during the Taiping Rebellion.

Tinted lithograph 21.8 x 15.4 cm, 28.9 x 21.7 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, one corner stained, but the image in very good condition. A view of the famous Whampoa pagoda rendered on the spot ("From nature") by William Heine with figures from a daguerrotype by Eliphalet Bronwn, prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of… the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Perry visited Whampoa on the Canton river in 1853, and his narrative noted in addition to the pagoda's religious significance, "its usefulness as a land mark by foreign vessels for they steer and anchor by its bearings.".

Perry's expedition visited Simoda (Shimoda) in April-May 18…54. The view records the funeral of a young American sailor, who perished in an accident aboard the vessel Powhatan (Perry's flagship, a steam frigate, seen at anchor in the background, along with two three other vessels).

Tinted lithograph with original hand colour 22.5 x 16 cm, 28.9 x 22.2 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, one corner creased and another with a small paper fault, but in very good condition. A fine cameo portrait of Buddhist Priest from a temple in Simoda (Shimoda) on the southeastern Izu peninsula, after a daguerrotype by Eli…phalet Brown, and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Perry visited Shimoda in April 1854, staying for three weeks and as his account bears witness was much impressed by the traditional way of life.

Tinted lithograph 15.2 x 22.6 cm, 22.8 x 28.8 cm (sheet), small stain affecting the top corner of the margin only, lower edge ragged, but the image in very good condition. A view capturing the first landing of Commodore Matthew Perry's (1794-1858) fleet in Japan, which was to have lasting ramifications. Perry's mission was to op…en Japan to international trade, with the tacit threat of gunboat reprisals. This show of force resulted in the signing on 31 March 1854 of the Convention of Kanagawa. The view by the expedition artist, Wilhelm Heine was prepared for Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.".

Fine detailed view by Wilhelm Heine rendered on the spot, ("from nature"), the lithograph with beautifully rendered tonal contrast, prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Ex…pedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". In March 1854, Perry had won access to the Japanese ports of Shimoda and Hakodate for American vessels, with the sigining of the Kanagawa Treaty, effectively beginning a process of opening Japan to the West. This fine lithograph is particularly appealing for the depiction of two cultures amiably interacting (despite Perry's gunboat diplomacy) with the charming added detail of a dog pausing on its way.
