EXCERPT: Preface - The authors of this textbook have adopted the standard arrangement of topics, beginning with trigonometric ratios of acute angles and proceeding to the general treatment of any angle. It is believed that this order of presentation best meets the needs of students taking a first course in trigonometry, and that it provides the soundest foundation for further study in any of the many fields of science in which trigonometry is applied. In the application of trigonometry to problems of a practical nature, emphasis has been placed on developing skill in trigonometric computation before assessing too closely the accuracy of computed results. To this end, only a brief consideration is made of significant figures in the early stages of the work. However, in the third chapter, two simple rules are introduced for recording results without exhibiting an unreasonable degree of accuracy. A more detailed study of approximate numbers and accuracy in computation with approximate numbers is undertaken in Chapter Sixteen. The numerous worked examples are intended to assist the student in following the presentation, which has been made as simple and direct as possible. Review exercises, co-ordinating all principles developed in each chapter, are included as well. The three sets of Test Papers are planned to offer additional review prior to the Fall, Winter and Spring Examinations, respectively . . . Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 208, xx, [1] ; illustrated, 4 in color ; 21 cm. ; John Horace McFarland (1859-1948) was an American master printer and horticulturist. Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. His wide-ranging achievements made a lasting impact on printing processes, horticulture, and environmental protection. During McFarland's early years, his father operated a nursery and a small weekly newspaper in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. McFarland worked in both of his father's businesses as a youth. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society. Hardcover. Condizione: Collectible-Very Good. First Edition. vii, 38 pages + 62 plates, many folding. Folio. First edition. Riqqeh and Memphis VI is one of a series of books published to report the findings of the British School of Archaeology in Egypt. Much of the work was performed by Reginald Engelbach, an engineer turned Egyptologist, and Sir Flinders Petrie, holder of the first chair of Egyptology in England. The artifacts they discovered, many of which are pictured in this volume, form significant parts of the archaeological holdings of the Egyptian Museum of Cairo and the British Museum. The book is clean and tight, with a faint and shallow (1/8 inch) line of water stain at the top of the rear cover and the top margin of the last 3 plates in the book; there also is some staining on the spine that does not obscure the still bright gilt title.
