Softcover. Condizione: Fine. Leichte Verformung / umgeknickte Seiten; Leichte Verschmutzung / Farbtonveränderung. …

Burman's 4th edition. 4to., pp. [lii], 263, xlix, 93, [i] + additional engraved title-page and folding portrait plate of the editor. Title-page in red and black with woodcut printer's device, head- and tail-pieces. Francis Hare's 93-page 'Epistola Critica' at rear, the presence of which indicates a large paper copy according to Lamb. Toned, with some leaves quite strongly affected. Light spotting. Small closed tear to middle of title-page (possibly a paper flaw), closed tear to lower margin leaf H3, final few sections with damp stain to lower fore-edge corner. Contemporary vellum, gilt spine with raised bands, gilt frame and borders, gilt centrepiece with the arms of Rotterdam to each board. Ties lost, boards a little splayed, top corner of upper board lightly bumped, few smudgy marks, good overall. Book label to front paste down, A. Roobol, and Cat '259' in blue ink. Plain endpaper with an inscription crossed through, illegible. 'To this day Burman's edition of 1727 is the only complete commentary on Phaedrus and has not been superceded. Unlike his variorum editions, the notes are Burman's own work. He uses conjecture sparingly and often discusses the emendations of other scholars at considerable length.' Vellum. pp. [62], 366, 1-258, [70], 367-398. Bound in full contemporary Dutch vellum over stiff boards, with manuscript title in ink to the spine. Complete with its striking engraved frontispiece by Joseph Mulder after an original composition by Philip Tiedeman, depicting Phaedrus seated at his desk in the foreground with an assembly of animals in the background. Elaborate initial letters, accompanied by a variety of headpieces, in-text vignettes, and other illustrations. Fables printed in Latin at head of most leaves, with commentary divided into two columns beneath. Light spotting to the extremities, neat bookseller's descriptive ticket affixed to the front pastedown, period ink name to the upper-right margin of the ffep, light sporadic foxing throughout; otherwise, the text-block remains bright and unmarked. This copy features a highly unusual and charming binder's deviation: namely, the 32-page 'Appendix Fabularum Aesopiarum' (pages 367-398), which properly follows page 366 to conclude the first part of the text, was bound out of sequence by the original binder at the extreme rear of the volume, immediately following the 258-page commentary and unpaginated indices. A contemporary Italian manuscript note at the foot of the final preliminary leaf helpfully alerts the reader to the anomaly: "Vedi l'appendice spostata dal rilegatore in fondo al volume" ("See the appendix relocated by the binder to the rear of the volume"). The period bookseller's descriptive ticket affixed to the front pastedown also erroneously conflates this rear-bound appendix with the overall length of the commentary. Nevertheless, collates complete. A handsome and unique copy of the celebrated variorum edition, which remained the definitive scholarly text of Phaedrus throughout the 18th century. The deceptively scarce cancel title reissue of the 1728 Luchtmans imprint based upon the unsold sheets from Pieter Burman's authoritative second variorum edition, originally printed in The Hague by Henri Scheurleer in 1718. Samuel Luchtmans acquired the remaining 1718 stock, stripped out Scheurleer's original title page, and reissued the work with his own 1728 Leiden title page. Undoubtedly as a result of this publishing history the 1728 issue is notably omitted by noted bibliographers Thomas Frognall Dibdin and Joseph William Moss. It is, however, accurately recorded by F.L.A. Schweiger (Handbuch der classischen Bibliographie, Vol. 2, p. 736), who notes: "Bloss neuer Titel zur Ausgabe von 1718" ("Simply a new title for the 1718 edition").References: Schweiger II, p. 736; STCN KW 1772 D 103 (1728 Luchtmans issue); STCN KW 1775 F 13 (1718 Scheurleer sheets). Provenance: Ex-libris bookplate of Prof. Dott. Ferdinando Galletti of Bologna affixed to the front pastedown. Second Burman Variorum Edition (1728 Cancel Title Reissue).…
