But this is too simple a picture of the situation. For reasons often forgotten today, Mantuans religious verse - in particular his hagiographic epics celebrating the Virgin Mary and (among other female saints) Margarita, Cecilia, and Catherine of Alexandria, and his De calamitatibus temporum, a three-book jeremiad attacking the waywardness of the times - had an enormous impact on readers at the beginning of the century. Looking at the poems today, their most immediate attraction would seem to lie in the subject matter of the first four eclogues: love and women, that is interests shared, as Faustus remarks in the third eclogue, by all young men (III, 42).
