Hardcover, 23 cm. Condizione: Sehr gut. 173 pp. Fresh and clean copy in good condition. - From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Mantuan was the most widely read quattrocento writer in England. By considering the appropriation and uses made of his poetry, this book shows why. It breaks new ground by examining how educators like Erasmus mediated versions of his poems that were taught in the schools. Professor Piepho uses commentaries and annotated copies to illuminate how habits of reading taught by schoolmasters affected writers such as Robert Burton in his Anatomy of Melancholy . Finally, he discusses how Mantuans eclogues, appropriated by Protestant polemicists, became an allusive background by which Edmund Spenser and other writers examined abuses of the English church. This book is essential reading for all future discussions of the role of humanism in early modern European culture. Reprint, stapled. Condizione: Gut. pp. 245-254. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Folded lengthwise, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: The vast influence of the Adulescentia, the collection of eclogues of Baptista Mantuanus («Mantuan» in England since the Renaissance), on sixteenth-century culture is due most immediately to its widespread use in the grammar schools of Western Europe. Looking at the poems today, their most immediate attraction would seem to lie in the subject matter of the first four eclogues: love and women, that is interests shared, as Faustus remarks in the third eclogue, by all young men (III, 42). Indeed, in the first eclogue we find out that pastoral love can lead to marriage. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.…

Reprint, stapled. Condizione: Gut. pp. 65-83. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Lengthwise folded, author's name underlined on cover, otherwise very clean. - From the text: The extraordinary exfoliation of English printings of the eclogues of Baptista Mantuanus (Mantuan in England since the Renaissance) that begins with Wynkyn de Wordes edition in 1523 might lead us to believe that it was by means of the Adulescentia, his collection of pastoral poetry, that Mantuan first established himself within the culture of sixteenthcentury England. But this is too simple a picture of the situation. For reasons often forgotten today, Mantuans religious verse - in particular his hagiographic epics celebrating the Virgin Mary and (among other female saints) Margarita, Cecilia, and Catherine of Alexandria, and his De calamitatibus temporum, a three-book jeremiad attacking the waywardness of the times - had an enormous impact on readers at the beginning of the century.
