The book then looks at inventive instructional elements in detail, more or less in the order they should be produced and used, from warnings and identification of parts to composition and connections through the movements and sequences that must be performed and finally, the successful results: a VCR that works! We feature the lucky strikes of anonymous artists. Ingenious solutions to tricky communication problems. We do not judge their effectiveness or beauty, but merely show what surprised us as original, creative, thrilling, touching or simply unbelievable. You may find examples from a manual that drove you crazy. We collected these illustrations from manuals, cut them from packages, copied them from museum and company archives, and stole them from airplanes. Too often, we never even saw the products that accompanied the illustrations. We've enlarged some pieces and added or changed colors for a few others. At certain points, the images have been arranged to facilitate comparison. But in general we give you these illustrations without prettifying or perfecting them-the authentic pictures are alienating enough. The language of visual instructions remains very primitive, with a limited number of signs and a weakly developed grammar. Visual instructions are still a small sub-category of visual information.
