La comparaison des pendules des trois stations devait s'effectuer au moyen de courants de repos, conformément au système proposé par M. le Dr Hipp, de Neuchâtel, les signaux d'ouverture donnés dans l'une des stations s'enregistrant simultanément sur les trois chronographes. A cet effet, les stations étaient reliées, sans aucune communication avec la terre, par un fil passant par le relais et la boussole dans chaque observatoire; le courant de repos était donné par une pile de 180 éléments Maidinger répartie entre les trois observatoires, 60 éléments pour chacun d'eux. Les relais étaient réglés de telle sorte que, lorsque le courant était ouvert par un signal donné dans l'une des stations, le relâchement de l'ancre fermait en même temps le courant de la pile locale; le même signal s'enregistrait ainsi simultanément sur les trois chronographes. Les signaux [étaient donnés par séries de 20, partant successivement de Munich, de Strasbourg et de Genève, puis dans l'ordre inverse de Genève, de Strasbourg et de Munich; l'on obtenait de cette façon la comparaison des trois pendules entre elles au moyen de 120 signaux, dont 40 étaientdonnés dans chacune des stations. La force de la pile nécessaire pour obtenir une intensité suffisante du courant de repos avait été calculée par M. le Dr Hipp, à la suite d'expériences faites les premiers jours de mai sur la résistance de la ligne dans les différentes sections, Genève-Bâle, Bâle-Strasbourg, Strasbourg-Munich, Munich-St-Gall, St-Gall-Genève. La résistance obtenue pour le circuit total était (le 21465 unités Siemens, correspondant à celle d'un fil de fer de 3mm de diamètre et de 1202 kilomètres de longueur; d'après les expériences de M. Hipp, même avec une résistance de 1350 kilomètres, l'intensité du courant donné par une pile de 180 éléments Maidinger était exprimée par une déviation de 30° sur nos boussoles, et les relais pouvaient encore marcher avec un courant d'une intensité très-inférieure, de 20 à 25°. Ce nombre de 180 éléments était donc largement suffisant, ainsi que l'expérience l'a confirmé. T'ajoute encore, qu'avant le commencement des opérations, les boussoles et les relais des trois observatoires avaient été envoyés à Neuchâtel à M. le Dr Hipp pour être comparés et réglés; M. Hipp avait en particulier, de concert avec M. le Prof. Schneebeli, mesuré à l'aide du chronoscope pour chaque relais, et pour différentes intensités de courant, le temps de relâchement de l'ancre, c'est-à-dire l'intervalle compris entre l'instant de l'ouverture (lu courant dans le relais et celui de la fermeture du courant de la pile locale. Un courant d'une intensité correspondant à une déviation de 30° sur la boussole de Genève donnait identiquement le même temps de relâchement pour les relais de Genève et de Strasbourg, et c'est celui qui a été adopté comme courant normal; du reste, le temps de relâchement ne différait pour les deux appareils que d'un petit nombre de millièmes de seconde, même en faisant varier l'intensité du courant de plusieurs degrés au-dessus, ou au-dessous de 30.…
